Husband

We come before the Lord with heavy yet hopeful hearts, lifting up this marriage and the struggles that have been shared. The pain of a spouse who is trapped in the bondage of drunkenness and harsh words is deeply grieving, not only to the one suffering under it but also to the heart of God, who designed marriage to reflect His love and holiness. The Scriptures are clear about the dangers of drunkenness and the call for believers to walk in sobriety and love.

Ephesians 5:18 warns, *"Don’t be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit."* Drunkenness leads to reckless behavior, broken relationships, and a heart that is distant from God. It opens the door to the enemy’s influence, distorting the mind and hardening the heart against love, patience, and kindness. Proverbs 20:1 says, *"Wine is a mocker, and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise."* This is not the life God intends for His children, especially for a husband who is called to lead his family with sacrificial love, just as Christ loves the church (Ephesians 5:25).

We also recognize the pain caused by harsh and mean-spirited words. Colossians 3:19 instructs husbands, *"Husbands, love your wives, and don’t be bitter against them."* Bitterness, anger, and unkindness have no place in a marriage that is meant to reflect Christ’s love. Proverbs 15:1 reminds us, *"A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."* The tongue has the power to build up or to destroy, and we must all be accountable for how we use it.

Yet, we know that no situation is beyond the redeeming power of Jesus Christ. If this husband is a believer, we call him to repentance and a return to the Lord. 1 John 1:9 promises, *"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."* If he is not walking with the Lord, we pray for the conviction of the Holy Spirit to draw him to salvation, for *"no drunkard will inherit the Kingdom of God"* (1 Corinthians 6:10), but through Christ, there is forgiveness and transformation.

We also encourage the wife in this situation to seek the Lord’s strength and wisdom. You are not alone in this, and God sees your pain. He is your refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). If you are in a place where you or your children are in danger, seek safety and wise counsel from trusted believers or authorities. The Lord does not call you to endure abuse, but He does call you to pray, to trust Him, and to walk in wisdom.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, lifting up this marriage and this husband who is trapped in the snare of drunkenness and harshness. Lord, we ask that You break the chains of addiction that have bound him. Convict his heart by Your Holy Spirit, and draw him to repentance. If he does not know You, Lord, save him! Open his eyes to see the destruction his choices are causing—to his body, his soul, his marriage, and his family. Soften his heart, Lord, and replace his anger with Your love, his bitterness with Your kindness, and his drunkenness with the filling of Your Spirit.

Father, we pray for this wife who is carrying such a heavy burden. Strengthen her, Lord. Fill her with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Give her wisdom to know how to respond, when to speak, and when to seek help. Protect her heart from growing hard or bitter, and surround her with Your love and the support of Your people. If there is danger in this home, Lord, provide a way of escape and bring safety.

We rebuke the spirit of addiction and anger in the name of Jesus Christ. No weapon formed against this marriage shall prosper, and every tongue that rises against it in judgment, You shall condemn (Isaiah 54:17). Restore what the enemy has stolen, Lord. Bring healing, sobriety, and a renewed commitment to love and cherish as You intended.

We ask all this in the powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer, who alone can break every chain and restore every broken place. May Your will be done, and may Your glory be revealed in this marriage. Amen.

Finally, we urge you to continue standing in faith, seeking the Lord daily in prayer and in His Word. Do not lose heart, for *"the effective, earnest prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective"* (James 5:16). If you have not already, we encourage you to seek support from a biblical counselor or a trusted pastor who can walk with you through this season. You are not alone—the body of Christ is here to uphold you in prayer and in love. Keep trusting the Lord, for He is faithful.

We're here with you, lifting up this marriage and your husband to the Lord. We know the struggle is real, the pain deep, but we also know the power of Jesus to transform lives. Let's keep praying, believing, and trusting in His goodness.

Lord Jesus, we come to You today, asking for Your mighty hand to move in this situation. Break the chains of addiction that hold your husband captive. Convict his heart, Lord, and draw him to repentance and freedom. Give him strength to overcome, and fill him with Your love, kindness, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Comfort and strengthen this wife, Lord. Give her wisdom to navigate this tough time, and surround her with Your peace and love. Protect her heart and guide her steps.

We claim Your promise in 2 Corinthians 3:18, "And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another." We believe in Your power to transform this marriage, Lord. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
