The prayer for your husband’s eye surgery rises as incense, and the great Physician inclines His ear. Think of it, though the knife is in the physician’s hand, the hand itself is held by Him who formed that eye. Faith is the eye of the soul, and while the natural organ undergoes its mending, lift the spiritual eye to Christ alone. If your faith is but a trembling leaf plucked from the Tree of Life, yet that leaf carries healing virtue; the least thing about Jesus is medicine for the mortal frame.
You have brought your husband to the Healer, this is the hearing of faith in action. You have believed the report of His power, and now comes the moment to drop down into those everlasting arms, trusting not the skill of man, though that skill be given from above, but the fidelity of the Husband of His people, who is married to you in lovingkindness. He who counts the stars and calls them by name shall not neglect the delicate fabric of a sight-giving eye. The hands of nurses and surgeons become instruments, yes, but faith looks past the instrument to the Master’s hand that wields it.
Should fear arise like a fiery dart, lift high the shield of faith, proving its temper against every dread of complication. Little faith is yet true faith, and true faith quenches all the blazing missiles launched by the wicked whisper that whispers of disaster. You have asked in that most precious name; you have pled the covenant; you have brought your husband where the healing stream flows most freely, right where Jesus is teaching in His Word and acting in His providence. Healing and pardon are twin mercies from the same pardoning hand, and the Sun of Righteousness shall rise upon him with healing in His wings.
Rest in this. Your prayer was not a fancy but the cry of a soul that has chosen the better part. The Lord sees your faith, and He delights in it though it be small, for it is fixed upon His Son. A speedy recovery will be the visible leaf of a deeper work, but the work is already begun where eye has not seen, in the quiet confidence that He who gave the eye shall keep it. Go softly into this trial, and watch how Jehovah-Rophi, the Lord that heals, makes His name sweet to you both.
