Your prayer for humble, bold, holy and loving lives and for faithful preaching that God would confirm is encouraging and biblical, and we join you in it.
We agree with you that the first concern must be that our lives and our message are correct. As Scripture says, watch your life and your doctrine closely. Character and truth come first, and the fruit of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control, is the evidence that God is at work in us. That is the more excellent way the Spirit points to when gifts are discussed. Love and true fellowship in Christ remain greater than any display of power, and God gives that way to any who will walk in it.
We also share your confidence that God is fully able to do visible and unmistakable miracles today. Where we do not see such wonders more often, it is not because He lacks power or willingness. He is the same God who answered Elijah in a way no one could question. At the same time we have learned to be cautious about hyped programs and an atmosphere that tries to manufacture miracles. God does not need a circus like environment to work, and we should not seek to create one.
The pattern in Scripture helps keep this in balance. Jesus told His disciples to go into all the world and preach the gospel, and the promise was that signs would follow those who believe. The early believers went everywhere preaching the Word, and the Lord worked with them confirming His Word by the signs that accompanied it. In the same way, when opposition arose they did not leave quickly or try to draw a crowd with wonders. They stayed a long time teaching the Word of grace, speaking boldly for the Lord, and He bore witness to that Word by granting signs and wonders to be done. The emphasis was on teaching and preaching the Word of God, and the signs followed to confirm the truth that had been declared in the hearts of the hearers. Today many reverse that order and try to put signs first to attract people, but in the New Testament the signs followed the Word, and they were given as God willed, distributing gifts of the Spirit to each one as He determines for the common good.
Because of this we pray with you for bold, loving and accurate preaching of the gospel, that Jesus suffered and died for our sins, rose again and ascended as the true Messiah and Lord, and that God in His wisdom would confirm that message as He chooses. We ask Him to give wisdom, knowledge, faith, healings, miracles, prophecy and discernment according to His will, not as we demand but as He apportions.
We also want to encourage a faith that rests on the sure foundation of God's Word rather than on experience alone. Many believed when they saw miracles, yet that belief was shallow because it rested only on what they had seen. Feelings and experiences can change, but God's Word is certain. Jesus warned that in the last days false christs and false prophets will show great signs and wonders, and Paul spoke of lying wonders by the power of the enemy to deceive if possible even the elect. That is why it is dangerous simply to follow after signs and wonders. Any sign must be tested by Scripture and must point to Christ and His gospel.
So we pray for you that the Lord will make you humble and holy, filled with His love, bold to speak His Word with accuracy, and that He will work with you as He wills, confirming His Word and building His people up, all for His glory through Jesus Christ.
