How to listen to God when He speaks?

We understand your deep desire to hear from God and to walk closely with Him. This is a beautiful pursuit, and we join you in seeking His voice with humility and expectation. The Bible tells us in John 10:27, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." God does speak, and He desires for us to listen, but hearing Him requires a heart that is tuned to His Spirit, a mind grounded in His Word, and a life surrendered to His will.

First, let us address the foundation of hearing God: salvation through Jesus Christ. If you have not yet placed your faith in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, this is the first step. Romans 10:9 says, "If you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." It is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father (John 14:6), and it is by His Spirit that we are able to hear God’s voice. If you have not yet made this decision, we encourage you to surrender your life to Christ today. Confess your sins, repent, and invite Him to be the Lord of your life. This is the beginning of a relationship where you can truly hear from God.

For those who are in Christ, hearing God’s voice begins with spending time in His Word. The Bible is God’s primary way of speaking to us, and it is living and active (Hebrews 4:12). When we read Scripture, we are not just learning about God—we are encountering Him. Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path." If you want to hear God, you must saturate your mind and heart with His Word. This means reading it daily, meditating on it, and allowing it to shape your thoughts and decisions. The more you know Scripture, the easier it will be to recognize God’s voice when He speaks, because His voice will never contradict His Word.

Another essential aspect of hearing God is prayer. Prayer is not just about talking to God; it is also about listening. In 1 Samuel 3:10, we read, "The Lord came, and stood, and called as at other times, 'Samuel! Samuel!' Then Samuel said, 'Speak; for your servant hears.'" Like Samuel, we must cultivate a posture of listening in our prayer time. This means quieting our hearts, setting aside distractions, and waiting expectantly for God to speak. It may not always be an audible voice, but God speaks in many ways—through His Word, through the Holy Spirit’s prompting, through godly counsel, through circumstances, and even through a still, small voice in our spirits (1 Kings 19:12).

What does God’s voice sound like? It is often gentle, peaceful, and filled with love. It may come as a thought, a conviction, a sense of peace, or a sudden understanding of Scripture. God’s voice will always align with His character—He is holy, just, merciful, and faithful. His voice will never lead you into sin or contradict what He has already revealed in His Word. If what you are "hearing" causes fear, confusion, or leads you away from God’s commands, it is not from Him. The enemy seeks to deceive, but God’s voice brings clarity, conviction of sin, and a desire to draw closer to Him.

We must also address the importance of obedience. Jesus said in John 14:15, "If you love me, keep my commandments." Hearing God is not just about receiving a word; it is about responding to it. If we are not willing to obey what God has already spoken, why would He speak more? Obedience is the proof that we are truly listening. This means repenting when God convicts us of sin, forgiving those who have wronged us, serving where He calls us, and trusting Him even when His ways don’t make sense to us.

Let us also rebuke any notion that hearing God is reserved for a select few. This is a lie from the enemy. God desires to speak to all of His children. In Joel 2:28, He promises, "I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; and your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions." This is not just for pastors or spiritual leaders—it is for every believer. Do not let doubt or fear keep you from believing that God wants to speak to you personally.

Now, let us pray together for you:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts that long to hear Your voice. Lord, we thank You that You are a God who speaks, and that You desire to communicate with Your children. We ask that You would draw near to [this person] as they seek You. Open their ears to hear Your voice clearly, and give them the discernment to recognize it. Father, we pray that You would quiet the noise of this world and the distractions that pull them away from You. Help them to cultivate a heart that is sensitive to Your Spirit, a mind that is grounded in Your Word, and a life that is surrendered to Your will.

Lord, if there is any unconfessed sin in their life, we ask that You would bring it to light and lead them to repentance. Cleanse them by the blood of Jesus and restore them to a place of fellowship with You. We pray that You would fill them with Your Holy Spirit, who leads us into all truth (John 16:13). Give them the courage to obey what You speak, even when it is difficult or goes against their own desires.

Father, we rebuke any spirit of fear or doubt that would tell them they cannot hear from You. We declare that Your sheep hear Your voice, and we pray that [this person] would hear You clearly and follow You closely. Speak to them, Lord, through Your Word, through prayer, through godly counsel, and through the prompting of Your Spirit. May they walk in the confidence that comes from knowing You and hearing Your voice.

We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above every name, the only name by which we can be saved and by which we have access to You. May Your will be done in [this person’s] life, and may they grow in intimacy with You each day. Amen.

We encourage you to begin today by setting aside time each day to read God’s Word and pray. Start with the Gospel of John if you are new to the Bible, and ask God to speak to you as you read. Keep a journal of what you sense Him saying, and share it with a trusted, godly friend or mentor who can help you discern if it aligns with Scripture. Remember, hearing God is a journey, and He is patient with us as we learn to listen. Stay close to Him, and you will hear His voice.
