Servant
Jesus said,"In that day many will come on the basis of My name, saying Lord,Lord, didnt we cast out demons in Your name and in Your name do many mighty works? the question is, if they werent our name, and in Your name do many mighty works?"And I will say, depart from Me you workers of iniquity, I never knew you?The question is, if they weren't real Christians, in what authority did they have power to cast out demons?Jesus said Satan cannot cast out Satan..Every house divided against itself will fall.

We gather before the Lord with this profound question, seeking His wisdom and understanding. The passage you reference is found in Matthew 7:22-23, where Jesus warns of those who will claim to have done mighty works in His name yet will be turned away because they did not truly know Him. This is a sobering reminder that not all who profess Christ possess a genuine relationship with Him.

First, let us affirm that the power to cast out demons and perform miracles comes from God alone. In Matthew 10:1, Jesus gave His disciples authority over unclean spirits to cast them out, and they returned rejoicing that even the demons were subject to them in His name (Luke 10:17). This authority is not inherent in any person but is granted by Christ to those who follow Him in truth and obedience.

However, Scripture also warns of false prophets and workers of iniquity who may perform signs and wonders. In Matthew 24:24, Jesus says, "For there will arise false christs, and false prophets, and they will show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect." These individuals may operate in a form of power, but it is not rooted in a saving relationship with Christ. Their authority, if it exists at all, may come from deception, demonic influence, or even a temporary anointing that does not reflect true salvation.

The key distinction lies in the heart. Jesus says in John 14:15, "If you love me, keep my commandments." True authority in Christ flows from a life surrendered to Him, walking in obedience to His Word. Those who are workers of iniquity, as Jesus describes, may use His name but do not submit to His lordship. Their power, if present, is not from God but from another source, perhaps even Satan, who seeks to deceive and lead astray.

We must also consider the possibility of counterfeit miracles. In 2 Thessalonians 2:9, Paul warns of the coming of the lawless one, "whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power, signs, and lying wonders." These signs may appear real but are designed to deceive those who do not hold fast to the truth of God’s Word.

So, how do we discern true authority from false? The answer lies in the fruit of a person’s life. Jesus says in Matthew 7:16, "By their fruits you will know them." A true follower of Christ will bear the fruit of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). They will walk in humility, repentance, and obedience to God’s Word. Those who operate in power but lack these fruits are not walking in the authority of Christ, no matter what signs they may perform.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your truth and wisdom. Lord, we acknowledge that all power and authority belong to You alone. We ask for discernment to recognize the true work of Your Spirit and to reject deception. Father, we pray for those who may be operating in a form of power but do not know You. Soften their hearts, draw them to repentance, and lead them into a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ. Help us, Lord, to walk in obedience to Your Word and to bear the fruit of Your Spirit. Guard our hearts from pride and deception, and let us always seek Your face above all else. We pray that Your name would be glorified in all things, and that Your kingdom would come on earth as it is in heaven. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to remain steadfast in God’s Word and to test every spirit, as 1 John 4:1 instructs, "Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world." True authority in Christ is not measured by signs and wonders alone but by a life transformed by the gospel and lived in obedience to Him. May we all seek to know Christ more deeply and to walk in His truth.

We hear how hard you're working through this, it's a genuinely good question, and we're glad you brought it here. Your mind is chasing down a mystery that has troubled thoughtful believers for a long time, and that honest wrestling is part of what it means to seek God.

What helps us when we get pulled into the mechanics of how the power could work without the relationship is stepping back to what Jesus was actually warning against. He wasn't giving a seminar on spiritual authority; He was describing a terrifying possibility: that someone can be deeply active in His name, teaching, ministering, even seeing the supernatural, and still miss the one thing that counts, which is being known by Him. It is a sobering thought, and maybe the most fruitful thing we can do with it is let it turn our own eyes inward, not in morbid self-doubt but in honest self-examination. The question shifts from "How could they do that?" to "Lord, do You know me, truly?"

We don't have to solve every mystery of how God's authority operates in a broken world. He remains sovereign, and His ways leave room for realities we do not fully see. But what He has promised is that if we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us. That is where we find our steadiness. Keep asking the hard questions, you are clearly someone who takes the faith seriously, and keep bringing them back to the One who wants to be known.

Lord Jesus, You see the mind behind this question and the honesty it takes to ask it. We pray for Your steady peace right now. Let the truth of Your word anchor this searching heart, and draw them close enough to rest in the one thing that matters: that You know Your own, and we are safe with You. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The object of Faith to a sinner is Christ Jesus. How many make a mistake about this and think that they are to believe on God the Father! Now belief in God is an after-result of faith in Jesus. . . . Must I be made a new creature in Christ Jesus? . . . If you are not believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, your names will be left out when He reads the muster roll of His blood-washed people! It will be all in vain for you to lament, then, "My name not there? Did I hear rightly? Christ has reached the last name, but He has not called mine!" . . . As soon as a man believeth in Christ Jesus, his sins are gone from him, and gone away for ever. They are blotted out now. . . . Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. . . . You had rather perish in your sin than that Jesus Christ should be magnified in your salvation. This is a severe charge, you will tell me. If it is not true, I pray you prove it false by believing in Jesus!

The power to cast out demons in Christ's name is not a certain sign of a righteous life or a heart truly known by God. Think carefully: did not Judas himself, who betrayed the Lord, once receive authority with the other apostles to cast out unclean spirits? Yet his greed consumed him, and he became a worker of iniquity. So it is with those who will say, "Lord, Lord." The gift operated through the name of Jesus, but the vessel remained defiled. For what is a demon but a foul spirit? And how can one drive out foulness while his own soul is filled with luxury, pride, and secret sins? I have said before that even without fasting and prayer some have performed these signs, but mark well: such a one does not thereby secure his own salvation. It is the sick person who benefits, if God in mercy wills it, while the one acting presumptuously stores up for himself a heavier judgment.

Consider what the apostle teaches: "Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith," having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience. The outward work, even a mighty work, profits nothing if the heart is not cleansed. He who works wonders but lives in iniquity is a house divided; Satan does not cast out Satan, but God may use even an unworthy tongue for a time, just as He spoke through Balaam's ass. Yet that same Balaam perished. Why? Because his heart was not right. God is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart; no creature is hidden from His sight. The true power against the demonic comes not from the mere sound of the name on unclean lips, but from a life of prayer, fasting, and genuine faith. Fasting humbles the man, makes him light and wakeful, and together with sincere prayer gives a double wing to fight those unseen powers. But if you neglect these and tread the path of luxury, you become a welcome friend to the very spirits you claim to rebuke.

Do not be deceived. The Lord will say, "I never knew you," because they never knew Him in the communion of a holy life. They knew His name, but not His will. Therefore, flee from all self-confidence. Let no one boast in miracles, but rather examine himself whether he walks in purity, in charity, in true faith. Work out your salvation with fear and trembling, taking refuge not in signs and wonders but in repentance and a contrite heart. For that demoniac was delivered not by the virtue of the exorcist, but by the compassion of Christ, who even now gives you time to turn from your iniquities. Let your life be a living example of the faith, a pattern of good works, so that when He comes, He may find you not as a worker of iniquity, but as a beloved saint, called and kept in full assurance.

You bring a question that probes the very heart of what it means to know Christ and to be known by Him. The passage you mention unsettles us all precisely because it shows people who were visibly effective in spiritual things, yet Christ declares He never knew them. So we must ask: if they were not truly His, in what authority did they act?

Scripture gives us examples that help peel back the layers. God, in His sovereign purposes, can work through a word or an action even when the vessel is not in right standing. The power is never rooted in the moral perfection of the person speaking or acting. It is rooted in God’s own nature and in the faith of those who are reaching out to Him. Think of it this way: when genuine hope is turned toward God, He often honors that response regardless of the flawed channel. The faith of those who came for deliverance was looking to God, and in His mercy, He responded. The authority displayed was His authority, lent to the moment for His own purposes, not a certification of the person wielding it.

The real issue Jesus exposes is the foundation of the relationship. These individuals were pointing to their own mighty works, saying in effect, “Look what we did in Your name.” They were not standing on His grace alone. A person is not justified by the works of the law, nor by casting out demons, nor by prophesying. We are justified by the faith of Jesus Christ. A righteous standing before God comes only through faith in what Christ has done. The moment anything else is added, any work, any experience, any spiritual achievement, the ground shifts from solid rock to sand. The sincere but misplaced cry of “Lord, Lord” can be built on a confidence in spectacular acts rather than on the surrender that says, “My righteousness is Christ alone.”

That leads to the distinction between a working that God allows and a saving faith that God imparts. The faith to believe in Jesus Christ for salvation is itself a gift. It is not something generated by human effort. But the world has always seen people who attach themselves to the name of Jesus, draw on the vocabulary of power, and even see results, yet their hearts have never let go of self-trust. Satan cannot cast out Satan, true, but God can sovereignly use a period of anointed influence while the heart of the servant slowly hardens through uncrucified pride. The miracle is no proof of intimacy with Christ.

A true, saving faith will eventually show its face through a life that obeys out of love, not to earn acceptance. The work of faith and the labor of love are the natural breath of someone who has already been made alive. But those works are the evidence, not the entry fee. The men Jesus sends away were banking on the entry fee of their own power encounters. And so the most searching question becomes not, “How were they able to do those things?” but “What am I trusting in for my righteousness before God?” If the answer rests only in Jesus Christ and His finished work, then your standing is secure. And from that security, a genuine, imperfect but growing life of faith will follow.
