We join together with you in reflecting on 1 Chronicles 6:66 and we thank God for your desire to see how He provides for both body and soul.

This verse, that some of the Kohathite clans were given as their territory towns from the tribe of Ephraim, may seem at first to be only a record of land distribution, but we see in it a beautiful picture of our Father's faithful provision. The Kohathites were Levites set apart for the most holy work of caring for the objects of the tabernacle. They had no large inheritance of their own like the other tribes, for as it is written in Deuteronomy 18:2, their inheritance was the Lord Himself. Yet God did not leave them without physical provision. He commanded the other tribes to share towns and pasturelands with them, as seen in Numbers 35:2, and here He places them strategically within Ephraim, a large and influential tribe in the heart of Israel. We see that God cared for their daily material needs, for homes and towns and land to sustain their families, so that they could be free to focus on their sacred duties.

This encourages us to trust that our God sees and supplies both needs at once. He does not only care for our souls and neglect our bodies, nor does He only feed our bodies and leave our souls empty. Jesus taught us this same truth when He said in Matthew 6:33, Seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. And we are promised in Philippians 4:19, My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Just as He provided towns for the Kohathites, He provides for us today, often through the fellowship and sharing of His people.

We also see the deeper spiritual provision. The Levites were scattered throughout Israel so that no family would be far from spiritual guidance and the teaching of God's law. God wanted His presence and His word to be near to all His people. This points us directly to Jesus Christ, who is the true Bread of Heaven and the Word of Life. Where the Kohathites carried the holy objects that pointed to God's presence, Jesus Himself is God's presence come to us. He said in John 6:35, I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. And in John 1:1 we read, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Through Jesus, God has provided the ultimate spiritual sustenance that never fails. While the Kohathites could only minister in one place at a time, Jesus as our great High Priest lives forever to provide for us continually.

We are reminded in Hebrews 7:25, Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, seeing that he lives forever to make intercession for them. His priesthood is greater than that of the Levites because He offered Himself once for all and now intercedes for us without end. Because of Him we can trust that our spiritual need for forgiveness, access to God, and daily grace is fully met, and because He is risen and reigning, we can also trust Him with our physical needs for provision, work, and daily bread.

There is sweet instruction even in this short chronicle of towns, for it shows how the Lord cares for those who bear His holy things. The Kohathites had the charge of the most holy objects of the tabernacle, yet they had families to feed and houses to dwell in, and the Lord did not leave them to want. He moved the tribe of Ephraim, a great and influential tribe in the midst of the land, to give up towns for their dwelling. Thus He daily loadeth His people with benefits, and His mercies come to us not only in spiritual blessings but in the simple form of preserved life, of daily bread, of a place to lay our head.

You ask how this encourages trust for both soul and body. Consider that every moment needs heavings of the lungs and pulsings of the blood, and the slightest circumstance might prevent one or the other, yet His continued benefits keep us. We are constantly exposed to peril, yet we live. If He so provided towns and pasturelands for the Levites that they might give themselves to His service, shall He not provide for you who seek to serve Him now. The Christian has God's promise for it. He believes that Bible to be God's Book, and when he finds God saying anything in that Book to him, he believes it to be true. God has promised His people that if they trust Him they shall lack no good thing.

So learn to drive out all unbelief. I will believe, said one of old, that my Heavenly Father, who feeds the ravens, will feed me, and that if He does not allow even the gnats that dance in the sunbeam to perish for lack of sustenance, He will not allow a soul that rests upon Him to perish for lack of daily bread. He that watches for God's hand will never be long without seeing it. If you will only spy out God's mercies with half an eye, you will see them every day of the year. Fresh are the dews of each morning and equally fresh are its blessings.

This provision points beyond Ephraim to Christ Himself. The Kohathites carried the ark, but they could not open the way into the holiest. Jesus is our great High Priest who lives forever to intercede for us, and therefore He is able to save to the uttermost those who come unto God by Him. He is the Bread of Heaven and the Word of Life. As the towns fed the bodies of the Levites that they might minister, so Christ feeds our souls that we might live unto God. Take Jesus to be everything that God's law and your conscience can require, for His righteousness is wrapped about His people and they are accepted in the Beloved.

For today, trust Him for both tables. For your body, ask your daily bread and expect it from His hand, and then go and work in His vineyard as long as it is called today. For your soul, come to Christ as a sinner, just as you are, and trust in Him alone for salvation, for there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved. Like Mephibosheth, you are made to sit daily at the King's table, and from His fullness you receive portion after portion. Let praise come as often as prayer, and bless Him by gratitude for His daily benefits and by submission to His chastening hand.

May the Lord enable you to see that your salvation is in Him, and to declare His wondrous works as one whom He has taught from youth. And may you prove this promise true in your own life.
