We join with you in reflecting on this powerful promise in Ezekiel 43:7 where He said to me, Son of man, this is the place of my throne, and the place of the soles of my feet, where I will dwell among the children of Israel forever. The house of Israel will no more defile my holy name, neither they, nor their kings, by their prostitution, and by the dead bodies of their kings in their high places.

We are deeply encouraged by this word because it reveals both God's sovereignty and His nearness. The place of His throne speaks of His absolute kingship and authority, and the place for the soles of His feet speaks of His intimate presence walking among His people. After the grief of exile when the glory had departed as seen in Ezekiel 10:18-19, this promise is restoration. It tells us our faith is not built on a God who visits and leaves, but on a God who purposes to remain. This encourages us because His dwelling forever means His faithfulness does not depend on our faithfulness. As He has said, I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you in Hebrews 13:5. For us today this promise is fulfilled and made even more personal, for we know that the Word became flesh, and lived among us. And we look forward to the ultimate fulfillment when as Revelation 21:3 declares, Behold, God's dwelling is with people, and he will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. This gives us confidence that no matter our present exile or hardship, God's presence is our permanent inheritance.

We also hear clearly the call to honor His holy name that is woven into this verse. To live in a way that honors God's holy name means to live set apart, because His presence and sin cannot coexist. Israel had defiled His name through spiritual prostitution, which is idolatry, giving to idols the love and worship that belongs only to God, and through defiling practices that treated holy things as common. We understand that the same principle applies to us. To honor His name is to turn from idols, from sexual immorality, from impurity and compromise, and to walk in holiness. As He who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all of your behavior, because it is written, You shall be holy, for I am holy in 1 Peter 1:15-16. It also means to honor Jesus as the true Bread of Heaven and Word of Life, for Jesus said in John 6:35, I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. Jesus is the Word made flesh, the true temple where the fullness of God dwells in Colossians 2:9, and the only way by which we can dwell with a holy God. There is no other name by which we can be saved and have access to the Father except through Jesus Christ, and it is only through His blood that we are cleansed to become a holy dwelling for Him.

This verse challenges us to reflect His holiness in daily life not as a burden but as a response to love. If our bodies and our lives are now the place of His throne, we must ask what we have allowed to sit upon that throne with Him. We are called to keep the place of His feet clean, to put away distractions and compromises and to offer our whole lives in worship.

There is rich and abiding comfort in this word, "This is where I will live among the Israelites forever." When Ezekiel saw this vision, the people were in exile and the temple lay in ruins, and in an earlier vision the prophet had seen the glory of the Lord departing from the house because of their idolatry. To a broken and scattered people, this promise was as life from the dead, that the God who had withdrawn for their sin would return and never again remove His presence. This is the everlasting covenant of which the prophet Jeremiah speaks, "I will make an everlasting covenant with them." It rests not upon our faithfulness, which wavers, but upon His immutability, for He says, "I am the Lord, I change not, therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed." The encouragement to faith is this, that His dwelling is forever. He does not visit His people for an hour and leave them to perish, but He abides.

He calls it "the place of my throne and the place for the soles of my feet." In those two phrases you have both His sovereignty and His nearness. As King He reigns, as one who walks among His people He is intimately present. This was first spoken of the temple, but it finds its full meaning in Christ Jesus. In Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily, and He is the true Temple, as He said, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up," speaking of His body. John tells us, "The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us," literally tabernacled among us. And now through Him, by the Holy Spirit, this promise is fulfilled in every believer, for ye are the temple of the living God. The Father joins in the verdict of His Son that it is finished, and the Holy Spirit applies that finished work by dwelling in you, by which indwelling ye know ye are now God's people.

But we must remember that God's house is not lawless. It is the abode of liberty, but not of license. They that dwell in God's house are in His immediate Presence and our God is a consuming fire. He had better be holy who dwells with the thrice holy God. The temple becomes holy because God dwells in it. Even so, special communion with the Lord creates special holiness. God's Presence demands and creates holiness. Under the old covenant there was one little chamber called the Holy of Holies, but now the law of the house is, "all must be holy, yea, most holy." Without holiness, practical, personal, active, vital holiness, no one shall see the Lord. This is not perfection of holiness in the flesh, which no man who knows his own heart would claim, but it is a real and living holiness, animated and warm, not the icy cold of mere morality. Moral reformation will not save you, but the regenerating power of the Holy Spirit which makes a man love that which is good and hate that which is evil, that is the holiness which His presence works.

What then does it mean to honor His holy name and to live in a way that hallows it. Man's chief end is to glorify God, and God's great objective is to make to Himself a glorious and an everlasting name, for there is no name so worthy to be known. We hallow His name when instead of vice and self seeking there comes forth holiness, love to God, love to men and every amiable virtue. Then God's name is glorified. You ask concerning the Bread of Heaven, the Word of Life, Jesus the Word of God. He is that Word out of God's mouth by which we live. Give me but a word out of God's mouth, and I can live upon it. Jesus said, "I am the bread of life," and to feed upon Him is to take hold of God's covenant. As the sermon says, the horns of the altar and the corners of the ark are your holdfasts upon the covenant of grace. So you lay hold upon Christ by faith, you take hold of a promise in His Word and you will not let it go.

This holy fear and this holy life are kept alive by means. The fear of God is kept alive in our hearts by the hearing of the Word, for faith cometh by hearing, and holy fear cometh through faith. Be diligent then in hearing the Word, in feeding daily upon that Bread from heaven. Let your law book be the holy Bible, your armory the holy covenant, your comfort holy prayer. Let your life be a clean, holy temple where His presence can rest. The consequence of God's presence is a holy liveliness in all its members, for where God comes near to man, lethargy and death soon fly away.

If you are struggling after holiness today, let this grand truth comfort you, that God does what He does for the glory of His own name, and therefore He will not forsake you. His holdfast upon His people is this, "I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me." He who puts the fear there will keep it there. Cry to Him to cleanse the heart, the place of His throne in you. Ask Him to show you any idol or distraction which has set itself up near His throne, and to cast it down. Pray that He would reign as Lord over your thoughts, your choices and your home.

May the God of peace, who found for us a Shepherd when we were as sheep going astray, make you holy in all manner of conversation, and keep you by His indwelling presence until you see Him face to face in that new creation where it shall be said, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them."
