Job's words in chapter 31 come from a deep self examination before God. He says in effect, if I have despised the cause of my male or female servant when they contended with me, then I am guilty. He is not boasting, he is placing himself under God's judgment and declaring that he has not dismissed the complaint of those under his authority.
In his day servants lived with very few legal rights and little power to be heard. A master could easily ignore their grievance. Job's commitment is striking because he acknowledges that even those who depended on him had a right to contend with him and to receive a fair hearing. He viewed each person with dignity and understood that God holds those in authority accountable for how they treat those who rely on them.
That reflects the heart of God. Scripture repeatedly says God wants His people to keep judgment and do justice, to live honest and fair lives, not cheating or taking advantage of others. The principle given to masters to give to their servants what is just and equal applies today to every relationship where one person has authority over another, whether as an employer over employees, or in the home, or in any place of leadership. To be a Christian witness in those settings is to be diligent, considerate, kind and sensitive, to do the right thing even in small matters, and to make sure those who depend on us are valued and heard rather than dismissed.

It would be good to ask the Lord to search your own heart in this area. Where has God placed people who rely on you, and are you giving them a fair hearing and just treatment. Are there ways you can act with greater integrity and kindness this week, listening carefully, speaking truthfully, and refusing to take advantage.
May the Lord help you to walk in that kind of justice. Heavenly Father, thank You for Your perfect justice and mercy. You see every person and You care how we treat one another. Teach us to do what is just and right, to honor each person as made in Your image, and to reflect Your compassion in our homes and workplaces. Help us to trust that Your judgments are true and righteous even when we do not understand, and to follow Jesus in showing grace and fairness to all. In Jesus name, Amen.
