How do I know if I’m being Planted by God or being Attcked by the devil?

Beloved of All
How do I know if I’m being Planted by God or being Attcked by the devil? Often, God separates breaks test and rebuilds that which he seeks to elevate. He plants us. How do I know this season of misfortune is from God planting me and not just my random bad luck/devil attacks? Or simply consequence of my own ineptitude?

We hear your heart in this question and we join with you in seeking wisdom from the Lord, for this is a question many believers wrestle with in seasons of hardship and isolation.

You are right that God often plants us before He elevates us. He separates, prunes, tests and rebuilds. We see this throughout Scripture. The Lord says those planted in Yahweh's house will flourish in the courts of our God Psalm 92:13, and that the one who trusts in Yahweh is like a tree planted by the waters who spreads out its roots by the river Jeremiah 17:7-8. Planting feels like being buried, it is dark and lonely and hidden, but God does it for growth. He also prunes every branch that bears fruit that it may bear more fruit John 15:2. So not every painful season is an attack, some is divine cultivation.

At the same time we know our enemy is real. The thief only comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came that we may have life and have it abundantly John 10:10. The devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour 1 Peter 5:8, and our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of wickedness Ephesians 6:12. And there is a third category you named honestly, the consequences of our own choices, for whatever a man sows that will he also reap Galatians 6:7, and God in His love disciplines those He loves as a father disciplines his son Hebrews 12:6.

So how do we discern which is which in a given season, we have found these biblical markers help us test the spirits and examine our own hearts.

First we ask what is the fruit and the voice of this season. God convicts with a specific loving correction that leads to repentance and hope, while the enemy condemns with vague shame and hopelessness. God tests to refine our faith which is more precious than gold 1 Peter 1:6-7 and He will not allow us to be tested beyond what we can bear but will provide the way of escape 1 Corinthians 10:13. The enemy tempts to draw us away into sin and despair, yet God Himself tempts no one James 1:13. If this season is pressing you toward more prayer, more dependence on the Word, more humility and more holiness, that is often the hand of the Gardener planting you. If it is pressing you toward isolation from believers, bitterness, secret sin, or doubting God's goodness, that carries the mark of the enemy's attack.

Second we examine our own responsibility before the Lord. We pray with David, Search me, God, and know my heart, try me and know my thoughts, see if there is any wicked way in me Psalm 139:23-24. We ask the Lord to show us if there is unconfessed sin, neglect of wisdom, laziness, or disobedience that has opened a door. If the Holy Spirit reveals something we repent quickly, for if we confess our sins He is faithful and righteous to forgive us 1 John 1:9. Not every hardship is caused by our failure, Job suffered though he was blameless, but honest self examination keeps us from blaming the devil for what needs repentance and from blaming God for what needs our correction.

Third we look for the peace and purpose that comes from God's planting. James tells us to count it all joy when we fall into various temptations, knowing that the testing of our faith produces endurance James 1:2-3. God works all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose Romans 8:28. Even when He allows attack, as with Paul's thorn, His grace is sufficient and His power is made perfect in weakness 2 Corinthians 12:9. A planted season will, over time, produce deeper roots, quieter trust, and greater fruit, even if it begins with pain.

We encourage you to seek wisdom directly from God, for if any of you lacks wisdom let him ask of God who gives to all liberally and without reproach and it will be given to him James 1:5, and to seek it in the Scripture and through mature godly counsel, for in the multitude of counselors there is victory Proverbs 11:14. Bring your season into the light with trusted believers who can pray and speak truth over you.

We notice your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me John 14:6, and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. It is by calling on the name of Jesus that we are saved, forgiven, and able to discern His voice. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, and to call upon Him daily.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we lift this dear one to You in the mighty name of Jesus. We ask You to give clear discernment in this season of misfortune and hiddenness. If this is Your planting, give peace to remain, courage to let roots go deep, and joy in knowing You are the Gardener who never abandons what You plant. If this is an attack of the enemy, we rebuke the schemes of the devil in Jesus name and ask You to clothe this one in Your full armor, to stand firm and resist, knowing the enemy must flee. If there are consequences of personal choices or ineptitude, shine Your light, grant humble repentance and practical wisdom to walk in a new way. We ask You to replace confusion with Your peace that surpasses understanding, to speak through Your Word, and to surround this one with godly counsel. Let this season produce endurance, character and hope, and let it end in fruit that glorifies You. We trust that Your thoughts are higher than our thoughts and Your ways higher than our ways Isaiah 55:8-9, and that You are working even now for good. We pray all of this in the saving and powerful name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Thank you for putting this honest question into words. Wondering whether this hard stretch is God planting you, opposition, or just the fallout from your own choices is not a lack of faith, it shows you want to walk honestly with Him.

In our experience those categories are not always neatly separate. A season can include real spiritual opposition and real mistakes and still be a place where God is doing quiet, deep work underground. What has helped others is to look less for a quick label and more for the direction your heart is being pulled over time.

Planting seasons often feel hidden and slow, even like being buried, and they tend to grow a quieter dependence, humility, and desire to stay close to God and to others, even while painful. Opposition tends to push toward isolation, accusation and hopelessness. And owning our own part without harsh self condemnation can actually become part of how God trains us, more like long term training than a single test, shaping character gradually rather than all at once.

One simple next step that often brings clarity is to bring this question out of your head and into conversation. Choose one steady, mature believer who knows you, share what feels heaviest right now, and ask them what fruit they see forming in you through it. Their outside perspective is often steadier than trying to sort it alone, and you can keep bringing your honest questions to God together with them.

Father, we lift our friend to You right now. You see the weariness and the confusion in this season. Give wisdom for each next decision, courage to own what needs owning, and peace to trust Your hand in what is still hidden. Keep them close to You and lead them step by step. In Jesus' name, amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

There is a weighty and needful question in your words, and the very asking of it proves that you are not asleep in this season of trial. Many pass through sorrow and never inquire after the hand that holds the rod, but you desire to know whether it is the Lord who plants you, the adversary who assails you, or your own hand that has brought you low.

Know first of all that to the child of God there is no such thing as random bad luck. If you are indeed in Christ, having fled to the blood of Jesus Christ His dear Son which cleanses from all sin, then not a drop of sorrow falls upon you without the Lord's permission. He is the great Husbandman, and His way with a seed He means to make fruitful is to bury it. He separates and breaks and rebuilds that which He seeks to elevate, not because He delights in your pain, but because He would have you take deeper root. As one taught in the school of God from his youth can say, O God, You have taught me, so the Lord still teaches His pupils. He was chastened, but he was never cast out, he still continued as God's pupil. That is planting. It is sore to the flesh to be covered in dark earth, but it is the place of future life.

Yet there is indeed an adversary, and he is not to be ignored. The Scripture shows us Patient Job, and how the arch enemy sought to overthrow him. The last enemy and all lesser enemies are real, and they would devour you if they could. But remember this, Satan is a chained enemy. He could not touch Job without leave from the throne, and he cannot touch you without the same. If it is an attack of the devil, it is still under the watchful eye of your Father, and He will not suffer you to be tempted above that you are able to bear. The adversary may mean it for your destruction, but God means it for your proving, that you like Job may sin not with your lips and may come forth as gold.

And you do well to ask also concerning your own ineptitude, for we must be honest before God. Our own folly and sin do bring bitter fruit. Sometimes what we call planting or attacking is simply reaping what we have sown. The tender heart will say, Search me, O God, and see if there be any wicked way in me. Is there sloth where there should have been diligence, is there pride where there should have been humility, is there neglect of prayer and of the Word where there should have been watchfulness. To own this is not to despair, for the same blood that justifies the ungodly cleanses the erring child when he confesses his fault.

How then shall you discern these things in this present season. I counsel you thus.

Look first to the Word of God, for it is preserved century after century that it might speak to you tonight with freshness and force. Bring your condition to the Word rather than bringing the Word to your condition. Does your trial drive you from God or to Him. The Lord's planting, though painful, ever draws the root downward into Christ. The devil's assault seeks to drive you to bitterness, unbelief and to charge God foolishly. Your own sin when truly seen will drive you to repentance and to the cross.

Look next to the fruit. What is being wrought in you. Is patience being formed, is self reliance being broken, is prayer becoming more earnest, is the world losing its hold. Then be sure the Husbandman has His hand in it, even if the enemy lent his hand to the shovel.

Seek the counsel of faithful and sober saints who know your life and will tell you plainly where you may have erred. We see but dimly when our own heart is troubled.

And above all, cast yourself upon Christ. Do not spend all your strength in analyzing the source of the wind while you neglect to anchor your soul. Whether it be planting, or sifting by Satan, or chastisement for folly, the remedy is the same, to run to Jesus. He was delivered for our offences and raised again for our justification, and there is no condemnation to them that are in Him.

Therefore pray after this manner, Lord, if You are planting me, give me grace to lie still in Your hand till the shoot appears. If the enemy assails me, rebuke him and cause him to flee confounded. And if I have sown in folly, forgive me for Christ's sake and teach me to walk more wisely. Make me Your pupil still, that I may yet declare Your wondrous works.

Be patient in this burying time. The seed does not see the harvest when it lies in darkness, but God does. He who has taught you from your youth will not put you to shame now. Wait upon Him, keep His way, confess what must be confessed, resist the devil and he will flee, and trust the Gardener to bring forth fruit in His season.
