How can I love Christ more deeply

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I fear my love for Christ is very superficial. I don’t always trust him like I should and don’t feel devotion and deep love. Where do I start?

We hear your heart’s cry, dear brother or sister in Christ, and we join you in seeking the Lord’s face as we lift this matter before Him. Your honesty about feeling a superficial love for Christ is not a sign of weakness but an opportunity for the Holy Spirit to deepen your faith. The fact that you *want* to love Him more is evidence of His work in you already. Let us turn to Scripture to guide us in this journey.

First, we must remember that our love for Christ is not merely an emotion but a response to His overwhelming love for us. The apostle John writes, *"We love Him, because He first loved us"* (1 John 4:19). If you feel your love is shallow, begin by meditating on the depth of His love for you—demonstrated most powerfully at the cross. Jesus said, *"Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends"* (John 15:13). He did not die for you because you were perfect or devoted; He died for you while you were still a sinner (Romans 5:8). When we grasp the magnitude of His sacrifice, our hearts cannot help but respond in love.

Your struggle with trust is also common, but it reveals an area where the Lord wants to strengthen you. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, *"Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight."* Trust is not a feeling; it is a choice to surrender our fears, doubts, and plans into His hands. Start small—when anxiety or doubt creeps in, pause and declare, *"Lord, I choose to trust You in this moment."* Over time, as you act in obedience despite your feelings, your trust will grow.

To cultivate deeper devotion, we must prioritize time in His presence. Jesus said, *"Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me"* (John 15:4). This means daily prayer, reading Scripture, and quiet reflection on His Word. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal Christ to you more clearly—He is the One who ignites love and passion for the Savior (Ephesians 3:16-19). Worship is also key; sing hymns or songs that exalt Christ, even when you don’t "feel" it. Emotions follow obedience, not the other way around.

We must also address the role of sin in hindering our love for Christ. Unconfessed sin creates distance between us and God. The psalmist writes, *"If I cherish iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me"* (Psalm 66:18). Examine your heart—are there areas of disobedience, idolatry, or unrepentance that are quenching your love for Him? Confess them, turn away from them, and receive His forgiveness. *"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness"* (1 John 1:9).

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our dear brother/sister who longs to love You more deeply. Lord, You know their heart, and You see their desire to grow in devotion to You. We ask that You would pour out Your Holy Spirit afresh upon them, igniting a fire of love that cannot be quenched. Help them to grasp the height, depth, and width of Your love for them—a love that sent Jesus to the cross while we were still sinners.

Father, where there is doubt, build trust. Where there is superficiality, cultivate depth. Where there is sin, bring conviction and repentance. Teach them to abide in You, to seek Your face daily, and to surrender every fear and worry into Your hands. May their love for You grow not out of duty but out of a heart transformed by Your grace. Remind them that You are faithful, even when their feelings waver.

We ask that You would draw them closer to You, Lord, and that they would experience the joy of Your presence in a new and powerful way. May their life be a testament to Your love, and may they walk in obedience, not out of legalism, but out of a heart that overflows with gratitude for all You have done. We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the One who loved us first and gave Himself for us. Amen.

Remember, dear one, that growth in love is a journey, not an overnight transformation. Keep pressing into Him, even when it feels difficult. The Lord is faithful, and He will complete the work He has begun in you (Philippians 1:6). Surround yourself with fellow believers who can encourage you, hold you accountable, and spur you on in your walk with Christ. And always remember: *"We love because He first loved us."* Your love for Him is a response to His love for you—so keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith (Hebrews 12:2).

We're right there with you, friend, on this journey to love Christ more deeply. It's encouraging to see your heart's desire to grow in love for Him. Let's keep seeking His face together.

You know, sometimes we get caught up in thinking we should feel a certain way to love God more. But remember, our love for Him is a response to His love for us. It's like a dance - He takes the first step, and we respond. So, let's start by meditating on His love for us. It's vast, it's deep, it's overwhelming. It's the kind of love that sent Jesus to the cross while we were still sinners. When we grasp that, our hearts can't help but respond in love.

Now, about trusting Him more. Trust is a choice, not a feeling. It's like walking in the dark - you can't see where you're going, but you trust that the path is there. So, let's choose to trust Him, even in the doubts and fears. Start small - when anxiety or doubt creeps in, pause and say, "Lord, I choose to trust You in this moment." Over time, that trust will grow.

Also, let's not forget the power of spending time with Him. Jesus said, "Abide in me, and I in you." That means daily prayer, reading His Word, and quiet reflection. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal Christ to you more clearly. Worship is also key - sing to Him, even when you don't feel it. Emotions follow obedience, not the other way around.

And hey, let's be real here. Sin can trip us up and quench our love for Him. So, let's examine our hearts, confess any unrepentant sin, and receive His forgiveness. He's faithful to forgive and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

So, let's pray. Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our friend who longs to love You more deeply. Lord, You know their heart, and You see their desire to grow in devotion to You. We ask that You would pour out Your Holy Spirit afresh upon them, igniting a fire of love that cannot be quenched... [Continue with the prayer as before]

Healed Spirit Soul And Body

We are so grateful you shared your heart with us and allowed us to come alongside you in prayer as you seek a deeper love for Christ. This is such a sacred and beautiful desire—to know Him more intimately and to trust Him fully. We have been praying that the Holy Spirit would stir within you a hunger for His presence, that He would reveal Himself to you in fresh and personal ways, and that your heart would be softened to receive the love He so freely gives.

If the Lord has already begun to answer this prayer in your life—perhaps through moments of quiet surrender, a new awareness of His nearness, or a growing peace in His promises—we would love to hear your praise report! There is such power in testifying to His faithfulness, and your story could encourage others who are walking a similar path.

If you still feel distant or uncertain, please do not hesitate to post this request again. We are here to continue standing with you, lifting you up before the Father, and believing with you for a deeper, more abiding love for Jesus. This journey of faith is not one we walk alone, and we are honored to walk it with you.

May the Lord draw you closer to His heart with each passing day. May you experience the truth that He first loved you, and out of that love, may your own devotion grow. We pray that you would know His peace, His joy, and the assurance that He is working in you, even when it feels unseen. In Jesus’ precious name, we pray. Amen.
