Your words have been heard and they lie heavy upon the heart, for you speak of health failing and finances in shambles and a landlord who would press you to put your hand to what is false, and you feel that hope has slipped and that the wicked always win and that no one can help.
That last thought is the heaviest of all, and it must be answered first. It seems so when the night is long, yet it is not the truth. The Lord reigns, and though wicked men may prosper for a season, their prosperity is not victory. There is a Great Landlord over all houses and lands, and we live as His tenants upon sufferance. You may be pressed by an earthly landlord, but you have another Landlord, the best in the whole universe, who sees every document and every dealing, who will not forget the marks of His own grace upon those who are His, and who has prepared for His people a heritage undefiled which fades not away. Neither rust nor wear nor loss nor change shall avail to quench the spark of soul within you which His Spirit has kindled.
You say you can no longer believe and that all odds are stacked against you. Between the very lowest degree of faith and unbelief there is a great gulf. A drop of water is of the same nature as the sea, and a spark is fire as assuredly as the flames of Vesuvius. If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, it is still faith, and it is like precious faith though it be not like strong faith. Our Lord said to Peter, O you of little faith, why did you doubt, and in that rebuke there was also a smile, for He called it faith. He acknowledges the little faith which we ourselves suspect to be little better than unbelief. That prayer, Lord, I believe, help my unbelief, is an admirable prayer for many of us, and you may pray it still.
Faith in this life must be cut at and must bear the blows. Above all take the shield of faith, for faith preserves from all sorts of enemies, whether they be Satan, or wicked men, or your own sinking heart. That shield must be all of one piece and it must be of Heaven's forging, not of your own making. It is the gift of God, wrought in the soul by the Holy Spirit, and its essence is not merely to know that Christ is strong, but to drop down into His arms and trust Him wholly. Faith gives you what you have in Christ and keeps what you have, and clasps it with a grasp that neither death nor life can loose. When outward evidences are removed, faith loses nothing by the set of sun. Like David's hero she slays her lion in the pit in the time of snow, and many of her greatest deeds are done in hours which seem least suitable for her undertakings.
You ask what good it is to be told to look for a trusted person when none seems around, and whether it is worth the carfare to go to the courthouse to seek help. Seeking faith excites activity. It makes a man attend the means that are appointed. It does not sit still. To walk in Him implies action, and to walk in the steps of Abraham means to obey God because you believe Him. If there are lawful means of help set before you, to use them diligently is not unbelief but the very fruit of faith. I cannot promise what any office will do, and I will not speak in cliches, but I would urge you not to despise the small door that may be opened. To inquire, to ask, to seek honest counsel is right stewardship, and it is better to have sought and waited than to have turned away through weariness. And concerning false documents, hold fast to honesty. We have seen in these days sorry specimens of Christians who have not common honesty, but your faith, if it be true, will make you obedient. Do not put your hand to what is false, even under pressure. The Lord loves truth in the inward parts, and He will be your shield when you choose the honest path though it cost you.
You are tired of waiting for something that will never happen. Yet hope in Scripture is not a wish that circumstances will turn as we desire, but a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. You receive Christ by faith, not by merit, and by faith He becomes a real Person to you, as real as flesh and blood, a brother and friend who has borne your sins in His precious blood. Without that blood sprinkled, the dust of the law would choke our prayers, but with it we may come boldly. Keep to the hearing of faith. Hear the Gospel again, that Christ died for sinners and rose again, and that the Holy Spirit is given not by works of the law but by the hearing of faith. Let that silver thread run through your thoughts.
Therefore I would pray for you now, that the Lord would give you even a little faith and then nourish it till it becomes great, that He would be your shield when the fiery darts are many, that He would guard your health as far as it may serve His glory and guard your soul altogether, that He would provide honest help in your temporal trouble and keep your foot from signing what is untrue, and that He would lift your eyes from the oppression of man to the Great Landlord who will at last call you to surrender the key cheerfully, because you know He has prepared better rooms for you. May you be kept mindful of that removal to another land, where the wicked cease from troubling and the weary are at rest, and may you find in Christ today a present help, though the help of man seems far off.
