Honoring God by Investing in Personal Growth and Self-Care

Anonymous

Beloved of All
Heavenly Father, Your Word says, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit… Therefore honor God with your bodies” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20). Help me invest in my personal care in every area. Teach me to care for my body, renew my mind through reading, and strengthen my spirit through Your Word. Grant me discipline, wisdom, and consistency to honor You with my life. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

We rejoice with you in this beautiful prayer, recognizing the wisdom in seeking to honor God by stewarding the body, mind, and spirit He has entrusted to you. Your desire to align personal growth and self-care with Scripture is a testament to your love for the Lord, and we stand with you in this pursuit.

The Word of God indeed declares, "Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 WEB). This truth reminds us that self-care is not selfishness, it is an act of worship. When we nourish our bodies with wholesome food, rest, and exercise, we honor the One who created us. When we renew our minds through Scripture, prayer, and godly wisdom, we resist the lies of the world and align ourselves with God’s truth. When we strengthen our spirits through fellowship, worship, and obedience, we draw nearer to the heart of our Heavenly Father.

We encourage you to seek balance in this journey. Discipline is essential, but so is grace, remember that "the Spirit helps us in our weakness" (Romans 8:26 WEB). There may be days when fatigue or distraction makes consistency difficult, but even then, God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Let your self-care be rooted in love for God, not in perfectionism or comparison to others.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the life You have given and for the desire to honor You in every area. Lord, we ask that You grant wisdom and discipline to care for the body You have created, a temple of Your Holy Spirit. Teach us to nourish it with what is good, to rest as You rested, and to use our strength for Your glory. Renew our minds daily through Your Word, that we may be transformed and no longer conformed to the patterns of this world (Romans 12:2). Strengthen our spirits through prayer, worship, and fellowship with other believers, that we may walk in step with Your will.

Father, we confess that at times we have neglected this temple or abused it through poor choices, whether in what we consume, how we rest, or how we treat ourselves. Forgive us, Lord, and restore us. Help us to see self-care not as an end in itself, but as a means to serve You more fully. Give us consistency without legalism, discipline without pride, and joy in the journey.

We also pray for discernment in the influences we allow into our lives. Guard our hearts and minds from worldly philosophies that contradict Your truth, and help us to seek wisdom from Your Word above all else. May our growth in You bear fruit that lasts, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

Lord, we surrender this pursuit to You, trusting that as we seek first Your kingdom, all these things will be added to us (Matthew 6:33). May our lives reflect Your glory in every way, and may others see You through how we steward the gift of life You have given. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

We love that you’re focusing on honoring God in your whole life, body, mind, and spirit. It’s easy to feel we have to tighten everything at once, but real, lasting change often works more like training for a marathon than trying to get it right in a single day. Small, consistent choices over time shape us deeply, even when we don’t see immediate results.

One gentle way to start might be to choose a single, doable habit in each area, and not worry about tackling everything else right now. For your body, that could mean a short walk, drinking more water, or going to bed just a little earlier. For your mind, it might be a few pages of reading that sharpen your thinking or feed your imagination. For your spirit, even five unhurried minutes in the Word can anchor your whole day. The point is to see this as training, not a test, you’re building a life, not proving yourself.

And remember that rest is part of honoring the body God gave you. In our eagerness to grow, we sometimes push too hard and miss that our limits are God-given too. So give yourself permission to be a work in progress.

Lord Jesus, we ask You to help this person walk in wisdom and consistency, not self-punishment. Show them what one small step looks like today. By Your Spirit, train them in lasting habits that honor You, and hold them steady in Your grace when things don’t go perfectly. In Your name, Amen.

You do well to lift that Scripture, for indeed your body is meant to be a temple of the Holy Spirit. Yet mark this well, the resolve to tend that temple through discipline and wisdom, however earnest, will collapse into the dust of mere good intentions unless you lean wholly upon the Spirit of God. Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now made perfect by the flesh? All these things are by the Spirit, and none of them can ever be produced in the soul of any man or woman apart from the divine influence of God the Holy Ghost. The body is made His temple not by your regimen but by His quickening presence; the mind becomes an altar only as He engraves truth upon its fleshy tablets. Seek not to invest in yourself by the strength of strong resolutions, for the Spirit of the Lord is not straitened, He alone can create in you both the will and the power to honor God with your life.

That prayer after personal care must be a prayer after the Holy Spirit Himself, for He is the very breath of the Church and the soul’s true renewer. How can you renew your mind through reading if the Spirit of enlightening does not take of the things of Christ and show them to you? How can you strengthen your spirit through the Word if the Spirit does not apply that Word with power? It is only the Spirit of God who can engrave the truth upon the heart; we speak to the ear, but only He can speak to the inmost soul. You ask for discipline and consistency, yet these are fruits of His indwelling, not the produce of your striving. The Spirit of God will cause you to live, to imitate the Christ of God, but only as you know Him intimately. Have you received the Holy Spirit? Do not mistake mere outward reformation for the sealing of the Spirit, the earnest of your inheritance. He bears witness with your spirit that you are a child of God, and from that union flows all true care of body, mind, and soul.

If you would truly honor God, then grieve not the Holy Spirit by trusting in the arm of flesh. The strength of a life is not measured by the vigor of its self-care but by the prayerfulness that the Spirit of grace and supplications alone can kindle. Better to be weak in self, simply the pen in the hand of the Spirit of God, than to build a temple of discipline that has no indwelling glory. Christ crucified is of no practical value without the work of the Holy Spirit applying it to your heart. Therefore, look not to your own investment but to His outflowing, for out of your innermost being shall flow rivers of living water when you are filled with the Spirit. He who has ears to hear, let him hear: today, if you will hear His voice, harden not your heart, but receive the Spirit of consolation and be glad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

Someone pointed this scripture out to me last week, and it was also in my scripture of the day app (no coincidences). It's actually one of my favorite scriptures: There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour...
