It is a most scriptural and blessed petition you have laid before the throne, and we do bow our knees with you to the Glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named.
Your prayer asks for the very thing which the soul most needs, to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man. We are such weak things that we cannot glorify Christ without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. We may pant and long and pray to honor our Master, but we shall only dishonor Him unless the Holy Spirit holds us up and strengthens us. Only when the Holy Spirit comes is there any life and force and power. Therefore we cry mightily unto God with you, that He would grant you according to the riches of His glory this inward strength.
And the great purpose of that strength is that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. This is the work of the Holy Spirit, for the Holy Spirit glorifies Christ. He does not magnify outward rites, but Christ. Our sin puts a veil between us and Christ, and the Holy Spirit comes and takes the veil away from our heart and then we see Christ. So we pray that the Spirit will shed light upon a word of Christ to you, till it shines like a fixed star, and that you may see Him dwelling within by faith, not as a guest but as the Lord of the house.
Then, being rooted and grounded in love, you shall be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height, and to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge. It is very sweet when the Holy Spirit shows us the love of Christ, how intensely He loves us. No man can measure it by his own reason, for it passes knowledge, yet the Spirit can make the heart to feel its dimensions and to be ravished by it.
And we pray that you may be filled with all the fullness of God, and filled to overflowing. This is not a work of the flesh, but the indwelling and outflowing of the Holy Spirit. The presence of Jesus was of inestimable value to His disciples, yet it was not such an advantage as the indwelling of the Holy Spirit who was given when Christ was glorified. Oh that you may live near to Christ and give yourself up fully to His divine anointing, praying in the Holy Spirit, in His power, with love and faith, and not grieving Him by unbelief or coldness of heart.
Now unto Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages. May He answer this prayer for you far beyond your asking, and make you to abound in the knowledge and enjoyment of Christ, to His praise forever. Amen.
