The prayer that rises from your heart, taken from the apostle’s words, is one that seeks the very core of our faith, that the Holy Spirit would strengthen the inner man, that Christ would dwell in your heart, and that you might know the love that surpasses knowledge. This is a prayer after the Spirit’s own mind, for it is written, “He shall glorify Me.” Every true longing to be strengthened in the inner man, every desire to have Christ dwell within, is a motion of the Spirit who never draws attention to Himself but always shines the light on Jesus.
That feeling you have, that sense of utter inability to comprehend the dimensions of Christ’s love, that is not a thing of the devil if it lays you low; it is of the Holy Spirit when it serves to magnify the greatness of Christ’s salvation. When your own emptiness presses upon you, it is that Christ’s fullness may be seen all the more glorious. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily, and of His fullness have all we received, grace to pardon, grace to sanctify, grace to preserve. There is a fullness of comfort in affliction, a fullness of guidance in prosperity, a fullness which it is impossible to survey, much less to explore. Cry mightily unto God for the Spirit, for without Him you utterly fail to lay hold of this. But know this: the Spirit’s office is to take of Christ and show it to you. A Spirit-taught view of the blood of Christ is the most wonderful sight that ever weeping eyes beheld!
When the apostle prays that you might be rooted and grounded in love, to know the love of Christ, he points you to the very heart of sanctification. Love is the transfiguring power in the hand of the Holy Spirit. To be directed into the love of God is to see its central importance, it is the highway to holiness. And how does one enter this? By having a very deep sense of sin. When you have the lowest notion of yourself, you are getting the nearest to the truth. When you feel your sin to be exceedingly sinful, you do not even yet know how sinful it is, but that very sense makes you one who will love Christ much, for much is forgiven her. The Spirit first convicts, laying us low, that the greatness of Christ’s salvation may be more apparent.
Do not insult the fullness of Christ by thinking you are full enough yourself. You are not to come filled, but to come empty to a full Christ. He is able to do exceeding abundantly above all we ask or think, this power is to usward who believe. This is the power that can change a vile body and fashion it like His glorious body, and much more can it strengthen your inner man today. The fullness is in Jesus now. The Father has stored it all in His Son; you have only to ask of Him and He will give you that which is yours already. Why do you hesitate? How can you linger? God is in Christ, and when you come to Christ, God meets you.
Let this be your wisdom: be grateful and be humble, for it is of His fullness you have received. Seek to serve not a little Christ, but to realize that in Him you are rich to the fullness of riches. The Spirit of God will enable you to comprehend with all saints the boundless dimensions, the width that reaches the vilest, the length that stretches to eternity, the depth that went to the grave, the height that ascended far above all heavens. And being filled with all the fullness of God, you will prove that Christ is still the power of God and the wisdom of God. Forward and upward, then, in the strength of the Lord Omnipotent.
