You ask to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your heart through faith, and to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge, to be filled with all the fullness of God. This is indeed a holy petition, and the very words of the Apostle teach us to seek it earnestly. But consider this: where the Spirit is, there Christ is also. For the Spirit sheds abroad the love of God in our hearts, not sparingly, but in a mighty torrent. This gift, greater than heaven and earth, He bestows not after our labors, but even before them, so boundless is His love. Despair not, then, if you feel unworthy, for the love of your Judge pleads mightily for you.
Yet let no one suppose that Christ takes up His abode where sin reigns unrepented. The body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; cleanse yourself from every defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Make room in your heart, have you not seen how the Apostle cries, “Make room for us”? Worldly cares and lusts crowd out the heavenly Guest. The monks who dwell in the desert, after their simple supper, sing this sacred hymn: “Fill our hearts with joy and gladness; fill us with the Holy Ghost, that we may be found well-pleasing before Thee.” Imitate them, not only with your lips, but by ordering your life after their pattern.
To be filled with the fullness of God is to abound in all virtue, to worship the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit aright, and to become partakers of the divine nature. Do not seek magnificent houses or fleeting honors, but emulate those who are rich toward God, who are poor for Christ’s sake and have great confidence before Him. Strive with me in prayer, applying the medicines of repentance daily, that we may both attain to the perfect health of the soul and obtain the eternal good things, through the grace and love toward man of our Lord Jesus Christ, with Whom, to the Father and the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honor, now and forever. Amen.
