Holy Spirit

The joy of the Lord is your strength, and in this holy exultation you taste the very wine of heaven. That peace which surpasses all understanding is no phantom of the mind, but the certain work of the blessed Comforter. When every other comfort fails, when the promise itself seems empty, it is then the Holy Spirit proves a rich comfort to the soul, filling the poor heart with peace and joy in believing. Your cup runs over, your soul cannot hold all that God pours in, and this is indeed the Spirit’s seal upon you, that you are His child.

Yet let us ever remember this: the Spirit always glorifies Christ. He receives of the things of Jesus and shows them unto us. That joy you feel is not a thing to rest in for itself, but to drive you deeper into the wounds of your Saviour. Beware lest the sweetness of the experience become a snare, for there are many who have great joy and much peace who are not saved, their joy springing from a mistake.

True joy and peace are the soul’s flower, but the root is faith in Christ alone. The Spirit’s work is not to magnify emotions or outward feelings, but to take of the things of Christ and reveal them. Go on, then, receiving of Jesus grace for grace, and the Spirit will feed you with holy oil so that the flame burns steady. Only do not grieve Him by unbelief or unholy walking; for if the dove of peace be driven away, the joy will vanish too.

Pray ever in the Spirit, for without Him there is no life, no prayer, no true delight. God grant you more and more of this, that your gratitude may run over even as your joy, and your household may be filled with the voice of melody and thanksgiving. Amen.

What a joy to read this! We are praising God with you for the palpable peace and overflowing joy that His Spirit is pouring into your heart. The kind of peace you describe, surpassing understanding, making you grin from the inside out, is one of the sweetest gifts the Holy Spirit gives, and it is meant to be shared. Thank you for letting us taste it with you.

Moments like these are a clear touch from the Lord, reminding us that He is both our Provider and our deepest delight. It isn't just a fleeting emotion; it is a real anchoring in His presence. Treasure this peace, and let it become a deep well in your memory that you can draw from in every season. When life feels ordinary or hard, this same Spirit remains with you, quietly producing the same fruit.

We also love your posture of simply receiving with gratitude. That open-handed trust is exactly how we keep in step with the Spirit’s work. May this testimony bubble over and encourage everyone around you.

Jesus, thank You for the Holy Spirit at work in our friend. Thank You for this peace that defies understanding and this joy that can’t be contained. Let it be a steady anchor now and in the days ahead. Use their life as a loud, beautiful testimony of Your goodness, and keep their heart ever open to You. In Your name, amen.

I am forever conscious and in reverence of who I serve

You testify of a joy that surpasses understanding, a peace that Christ promised His disciples after the Resurrection: “Your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.” This is indeed the fruit of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, and it springs not from worldly comfort but from the Holy Ghost bedewing the soul. When the Three Children walked in the furnace, it was not the nature of fire to refresh, but the Spirit gave them dew. So now, you taste that same refreshment. Rejoice, but with trembling: for this is a gift given to those who suffer for Christ’s sake and hold fast a good conscience.

Guard it carefully. The kingdom of God is not meat and drink, nor any outward thing, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost. Let no root of bitterness, no unconfessed sin, no strife with a brother, quench this Spirit. The adversary prowls to steal this peace through discontent or pride or careless living.

Keep therefore a conversation worthy of the gift. Walk in holiness, for the grace of adoption is not broken by death but makes you conspicuous even now. Let this inward gladness overflow into thanksgiving continually, not only when comfort abounds, but in every state, remembering Him who feeds you from youth and fills your heart with gladness to abound unto every good work. Pray often with the monks: “Fill us with the Holy Ghost, that we may be found well-pleasing before Thee.” Let your life become a testimony that draws others out of dangers, for the strong soldier frees his comrade.

To God be the glory indeed, world without end.

How good it is to hear the Spirit’s work erupting in such joy. That grin, that welling up of praise, the sensation of almost exploding from the inside out, that is not something the natural mind can produce. The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace and joy. The Spirit you have received is the Spirit of God, given precisely so you might know the things freely given to you in Christ, justification, redemption, righteousness by faith. What you are tasting now is that peace which surpasses all understanding, a foretaste of the full, rich life of walking after the Spirit in complete obedience and rest.

And yet, the moment you try to wrap words around it, you quickly discover there aren’t words to express the things of the Spirit. That vocabulary has not yet been developed. The joy is deeper than language, which is why the Spirit makes intercession and aids our worship. Your testimony itself is proof of the Spirit’s work, because no one can genuinely confess that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. That confession rising out of your gratitude is not a human achievement; it is evidence.

Stay rooted in how this began. Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? You did not lay down some final burden, or prove your worth, or finally become a fitting temple for the Spirit. God did not look at your deserving and then reward you with His presence. You received the Spirit as a gift, by faith, just as you received salvation. Your body did not become worthy of the Spirit by anything you did; it became the Spirit’s dwelling place because God is a giver. That keeps your joy steady. If the gift came by faith, then you are not walking on eggshells wondering if you will stay good enough to keep it. Many people have peace with God through justification, the war with Him has ended, but they do not yet enter into the peace of God, the rest of faith, because they keep looking at their works instead of His finished work. Do not let that happen to you. Enjoy this rushing river, and do not try to manufacture it tomorrow by some self-centered effort. True praise is not a transaction where we shout in order to get a blessing. True praise simply overflows from what God has already done.

Do not also be alarmed if, later, your feelings ebb and you find your faith wavering. You have read how even Abraham, the man of faith, once pawned off his wife as his sister. Men and women of faith have lapses of faith. That does not mean the Spirit has left you. The promise remains: the gift of the Holy Spirit is to you and to all who are called. He will continue the work within your heart as you yield to Him. So today, by all means, dance in the joy of the Lord. Let your spirit, made alive by His Spirit, bear witness with His Spirit that you are a child of God. Christ has brought you into that oneness. May He carry you ever deeper, from glory to glory, until your whole life becomes an instrument of praise, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
