Your prayer shows a hunger to hear God with a pure heart, a sincere faith and a blameless conscience, and that desire itself is pleasing to Him. We thank God with you that He is able to save forever those who come to God through Jesus, because He lives to make intercession for us, and that He has opened our minds to understand the Scriptures.

You asked about dreams and visions, and you quoted Job 33, Joel 2, Numbers 12, Acts 16 and other passages. It is true that God has spoken in many portions and many ways in former times, and that He did speak in dreams to Abraham, to Abimelech, to Joseph and to others, to turn people from wrongdoing and to preserve them, and to guide His purposes. The prophet Joel did say, I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. That promise was fulfilled at Pentecost. It was not upon the twelve only, but upon the hundred and twenty gathered in prayer and charity, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak as the Spirit gave them utterance. This was a new and abundant gift. In former days the grace of the Spirit was given sparingly to the prophets and then seemed to fail from the people, but after the cross and the taking away of the curse, when we were reconciled to God, the Spirit was shed forth abundantly as an earnest of our inheritance. An earnest is a part of the whole. God has purchased our salvation and has given His Son and His Spirit as a pledge, and when we show our faith by our works and continue in prayer and in love for one another, the Spirit draws near.

For this reason the Scriptures teach us that God now has spoken most fully through His Son, the foundational rock, and through the Holy Spirit speaking through the Apostles. Hebrews says God spoke in many ways through the prophets, but in these last days has spoken to us by His Son. The Spirit does not draw us away from Christ or from the written Word, but makes Christ known and helps us understand what is written. Isaiah says to look to the law and to the testimony, and Jesus opened the understanding of His disciples that they might understand the Scriptures, and Paul prays that God would give the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him.

This helps us know how to pray for you, for this husband and wife and for your whole family. God is able to do all things and nothing is impossible with Him, and His arm is not too short to save. Yet we are not taught to seek dreams and visions as the ordinary way of knowing His will, or to expect Him to give them on demand, or to put our trust in every dream we have. Dreams can deceive, and the enemy can counterfeit. What we need most is to know Christ, to be kept from sin and pride, to be preserved from the pit, and to walk in love.

So we pray for you in this way. Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your mercy through Jesus Christ alone, through whom we have access to You. Give to this husband and wife and to their family a pure heart and understanding of Your Word. Grant them the Spirit of wisdom and revelation to know Christ and to do Your will. Keep them in prayer and in charity toward one another, for it is there that Your Spirit delights to dwell. Guard them from temptation, from evil, from deception and from the evil one, and lead them away from pride and wrongdoing. Help them to test all things by Your Word and to hold fast to what is good, looking not to the noise of the world but to Jesus, who is able to keep them. Fill them with Your peace and make them children of light who have life through Your Spirit. We ask this in the name of Jesus, through whom every promise is yes and amen.
