God's holiness I His defining characteristic. The holiness of God in the Bible refers to His goodness and His power. I is completely unique and omnipotent. His holiness radiates like an energy. In fact, it is so overwhelming that it is dangerous to approach. One Biblical Scholar suggests that it is helpful to think of God like the sun which is so bright and powerful that it radiates out through the Solar system. We all know that it is a good and helpful thing to be within the sun's energy but at the same time it is dangerous to get too close.
God told Moses that no man could see Him and live. He was placed in a rock and was only allowed to get a glimpse of God's back part and at the same time God shielded some of his light from him.
Another example is the Holy of Holies where God Himself resided. The priests who worked in the temple had to take great care in order to keep themselves pure both ritually and morally since they were in close proximity to God.
The prophet Isaiah had a vision where he entered the temple as an impure man, but he was purified by a burning coal. This coal represented a physical embodiment of God's holiness.
Ezekiel also had a vision where the holiness of God poured out from the temple like a river revitalizing and purifying all the land over which it flowed. According to the Apostle Paul, holiness is a life of discipline, focus and attention to matters of righteous living. (Romans 12:1-2) Christians should therefore follow the Lord our God. In Leviticus 11:44 God said, "For I am the Lord your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy for I am holy."
