Holiness

That longing for a wise attitude toward holiness is itself a mark of wisdom beginning its work in you. True wisdom never merely studies holiness from a distance; it draws near and says, "You are my sister," making purity a close and cherished companion rather than a distant rule.

The starting place is always the fear of the Lord. Not a cowering dread, but a reverence that reorients everything. Without that, we collect facts about holiness while our hearts remain unchanged. Knowledge can fill your head with truth, but wisdom kneels before the Giver of truth and lets that posture shape every desire. So a wise attitude about holiness grows from the soil of who you understand God to be.

Remember that what you are really seeking is not an abstract idea but a Person. All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ. He is made unto us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification. When you listen for wisdom's voice in the Scriptures, you are listening to Him. A child can know God, while the world's sophistication misses Him entirely. So do not look for a clever technique or a deeper secret. Look to Jesus, and the holiness you pursue becomes a relationship rather than a project.

The wisdom from above has a distinct character. It produces purity, not sensuality. It leads to peace rather than envy and strife. So examine the thoughts you entertain about holiness. Do they breed gentle meekness, or do they stir a harsh, striving spirit? A wise heart will manifest its learning through a life of quiet good works. Worldly wisdom says indulge yourself or prove yourself; godly wisdom says humble yourself and walk in the purity that sees God.

Be warned against the confidence that thinks, "I am too wise to fall." Solomon in all his legendary insight proved that it is never wise to step outside the boundaries of God's word. A wise man hears and increases learning, remaining teachable, watching daily at the gates of instruction. Your own wisdom cannot keep you from death, nor can it substitute for simple obedience. But as you incline your heart toward understanding, refusing the flattery of sin, you will find that the path of the just grows brighter.

Hate evil. Let that be a settled revulsion, not a negotiation. A wise attitude toward holiness does not trifle with what Christ died to destroy. And do not overlook this: he that wins souls is wise. A holy life is never self-centered. It reaches outward, longing for others to know the life and favor found in the Lord. So let your pursuit of holiness be for yourself, yes, but also for the sake of a watching world.

Get wisdom. With all your getting, get understanding. And as you do, you will discover that finding wisdom is finding life.
