Your cry of Lord Jesus please help in the middle of this mess is a prayer God hears and honors. When the spirit is overwhelmed and the heart is in turmoil, when you have done your best and it is still not enough and you do not know where to turn, that is exactly the place where Scripture shows men like David crying out to the Lord.
There are no easy answers that fix everything at once, and the way to test what is right is by the Word of God. Does the path you are considering agree with what God has said. That is the measure. In that desperate place the most honest prayer is not I just need a little help while I still try to hold things together myself, but Lord I cannot do this, I need You. When we come to the end of our own ambitions and our own way and admit we cannot deliver ourselves, we are ready to call for help outside ourselves. The Scripture asks, who shall deliver me, and the answer is Jesus Christ alone. To come to Him is to come to the cross and reckon the old life of the flesh to be dead, crucified with Christ, so that a new life by the Spirit may live in us.
Vain is the help of man. Help does not come from the hills or from people or from trying harder. My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth. He is the Rock that is higher than you. When your heart is overwhelmed, ask Him to lead you to that Rock. That means taking the situation you cannot handle and placing it in His hands, committing your life and your ways to Him with confidence that He is able to keep what you commit to Him.
Bring it to Him plainly in prayer. Tell Him the problems that disturb you, the things that feel like deep waters going over your soul. You do not need to impress Him with loud or perfect words. He already knows, but it is for your benefit to pour out your heart honestly before Him. Remember also that this life is like a vapor, like grass that appears for a season. Those who live only for this life have their portion only in this life, but you are a pilgrim whose true portion is with Him in the life to come. Do not labor only for what perishes, but for what endures to everlasting life. Jesus said He is the bread of life and His words are spirit and life. Feed on His Word and let His Spirit minister to you.
Often God in His love allows us to be crowded into a desperate place so that we will finally turn to Jesus with our whole heart, because He knows He is the only One who can truly help. That desperation can become the beginning of His victory in your life as you lose your life in trying to save yourself and instead lose it for His sake to find real life in Him. The old life after the flesh, where the body and its desires dominate, is to be counted dead. The new life is spirit and soul and body with the Spirit in union with His Spirit upon the throne. There will still be a battle between flesh and Spirit, but you can say to Him, Lord that anger, that bitterness, that fear belongs to the old life and I reckon it dead, and I choose Your life in me.
May the Lord preserve you from fear, which can take hold and cripple a life, and give you His peace as you trust Him, delight in Him, and rest in Him. He hears you when you say make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation. Pray with me, Lord Jesus, I cannot do this myself. I give this mess to You. Forgive me, deliver me, lead me to the Rock that is higher than I, and give me life by Your Spirit. Keep what I commit to You and teach me to walk in Your Word which is truth and life. Amen.
