The cry of your heart is heard, and the Lord is not deaf to the groaning of His people. Yet consider whether you are begging for a mere outward stillness, a lull imposed by force upon unruly tongues, while your own spirit remains in tempest. The peace that passes all understanding is not the silence of a subdued household but the calm of a soul stayed upon Jehovah. You pray for God to take control, and that is right, for none other can still the raging of the human will. But the deepest quiet you need is that which Christ speaks to the conscience: "Peace be unto you." He does not merely muzzle the shouters; He hushes the heart.
Are you yourself resting where this peace is found? The blood of Jesus whispers peace within. There is no true quiet for the troubled mind until sin is pardoned and the soul is reconciled to God through the atoning sacrifice of His Son. You may cry for the noise to cease, but if your own standing before the Most High is unsettled, the silence you gain will be but the peace of the devil, a stupifying calm before a greater storm. Seek first the Prince of Peace, and then, with your mind stayed on Him, you will know a peace that keeps you even when the world clamors around you. That peace is a legacy from Christ Himself, won by His cross, and it is a peace that the world cannot give and cannot take away.

He can break the bow and cut the spear asunder; He can make a storm a calm so that the waves thereof are still. But remember, the peace He gives is not always the outward stillness we demand. Sometimes He lets the tempest roar while He keeps His child in the secret place of tranquility. Are you willing to receive His peace on His terms? Go to the cross for it. There is no other ground. Lay hold of Christ by faith, and then, having peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, you may go in peace, whether the house be quiet or not, for He Himself is your quiet resting place.
