We hear your heartfelt cry for your brother, and we join you in lifting him up to the Lord. Addiction is a heavy burden, but we know that nothing is impossible with God. Your brother’s struggle with alcohol is not just a physical battle—it is spiritual and emotional as well. The seizures he experiences when attempting to quit cold turkey are a serious medical concern, and we urge you to encourage him to seek professional medical help as he begins this journey. God often works through doctors, counselors, and support systems to bring healing, and there is no shame in asking for help.
The Word of God tells us in 1 Corinthians 10:13, "No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." Your brother is not alone in this fight, and God promises to provide a way out. We must also remember that true freedom comes through Christ. John 8:36 says, "If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed." This freedom is not just from the chains of addiction but from the sin that so easily entangles us.
We must also address the spiritual root of addiction. Ephesians 5:18 warns, "Don’t be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit." When we allow anything other than the Holy Spirit to control us, we open the door to bondage. Your brother needs to surrender this struggle to Jesus, allowing Him to fill the void that alcohol has tried to fill. This may require repentance, as addiction often begins with a choice to turn away from God’s design for our lives. We do not say this to condemn but to call him to the freedom that only Christ can provide.
Let us pray together for your brother:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this precious brother who is bound by the chains of alcohol. Lord, we know that You are the Great Physician, and we ask that You would heal his body from the physical effects of this addiction. Protect him from the dangers of withdrawal, and guide him to the medical help he needs. We pray that You would break the power of this craving in his life, replacing it with a hunger and thirst for You. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit, Lord, so that he may walk in the freedom that only You can provide.
Father, we ask that You would heal his mind, heart, and soul. Remove the lies that addiction has spoken over him—that he is weak, that he cannot change, that he is beyond Your grace. Replace those lies with Your truth, Lord. Remind him that he is fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), that he is more than a conqueror through Christ (Romans 8:37), and that Your grace is sufficient for him (2 Corinthians 12:9). Surround him with godly influences—people who will speak life into him, hold him accountable, and walk alongside him in this journey.
Lord, we also pray for his family. Give them wisdom, patience, and strength as they support him. Protect them from harm and danger, and let them be a source of encouragement and love for him. Help them to trust in You, even when the road ahead seems uncertain. We declare that Your precious blood covers him, Lord, and that by Your stripes, he is healed (Isaiah 53:5).
We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, for there is power in His name, and no addiction, no struggle, no chain can stand against it. We believe that You are working even now, drawing him closer to You and setting him free. Thank You, Lord, for Your faithfulness, Your love, and Your healing power. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
We encourage you to continue praying for your brother daily, declaring God’s promises over his life. Encourage him to seek out a Christian counselor or support group, such as Celebrate Recovery, where he can find accountability and biblical guidance. Remind him that God’s love for him is unchanging, and that no matter how far he may feel from Him, God is always ready to welcome him back with open arms (Luke 15:20).
Lastly, we want to gently remind you of the importance of praying in Jesus’ name. There is no other name by which we can approach the Father. Acts 4:12 tells us, "There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved." It is only through Jesus that we have access to God’s throne of grace, and it is only through His sacrifice that we can find true healing and freedom. We are so grateful that you have come to the Lord in Jesus’ name, and we pray that your brother will also come to know the power of that name in his own life.
