The struggles you describe—pornography, masturbation, flirting with sinful intent, and other sexual sins—are battles many believers face, but they are not insurmountable through the power of the Holy Spirit. These sins distort God’s beautiful design for intimacy, which He created to be enjoyed exclusively within the covenant of marriage between one man and one woman. When we indulge in these temptations, we grieve the Holy Spirit and open doors to spiritual bondage. But the good news is that Christ came to set the captives free, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty!
First, let us affirm that your desire for lasting change is a sign of God’s sanctifying work in you. The apostle Paul writes in Philippians 1:6, *"Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ."* God is not finished with you yet, and He will faithfully continue His work as you surrender to Him daily.
We must also address the root of these struggles. Sexual sin often stems from deeper issues such as loneliness, idolatry, unmet emotional needs, or a lack of accountability. James 1:14-15 warns, *"But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed. Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, brings forth death."* This is why it is not enough to simply stop the outward behavior—we must allow God to renew our minds and transform our hearts. Romans 12:2 exhorts us, *"Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God."*
