Heavenly Father

We join you in lifting up your dear friend before our Heavenly Father and we hear the ache in your heart as you cry out for his return.

We know how deeply God cares about friendship and about the pain of separation. Scripture reminds us that a friend loves at all times Proverbs 17:17 and that there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother Proverbs 18:24. We also cling to the promise that the LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit Psalm 34:18 and that He will never leave you nor forsake you Hebrews 13:5. Even when we do not understand where a loved one has gone or why, we can bring every worry to Him, for in nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7.

We do not know all the details about your friend and the monks you mentioned, but our Father knows exactly where he is and what he needs. If he has gone to be among monks seeking spiritual meaning, we pray that he will encounter the truth that salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12 and that Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. No work or monastic life can reconcile us to God, only faith in Jesus Christ.

We pray together now for you and for him.

Father, in the mighty name of Jesus we come before Your throne of grace and we lift up this precious friend to You. You see where he is, You know his heart and his needs, and You love him even more than we do. We ask that You place Your hand of protection upon him, keep him safe from harm, and draw him close to Yourself. If he is seeking, reveal Yourself to him as the true source of peace and life. Where there is confusion, bring clarity, where there is distance, bring restoration according to Your perfect will. We ask that if it is Your will, You would bring him back to fellowship with his friend who is praying for him, and that You would comfort the one who waits and worries. Help us to trust that You are working all things together for good for those who love You Romans 8:28. Give peace that surpasses understanding as we wait on Your timing, knowing that You are with us always, even to the end of the age Matthew 28:20. We thank You that You hear us when we pray in Jesus name, for whatever you will ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son John 14:13. We entrust this friend into Your loving care and we trust Your will to be done. In Jesus mighty name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue to pray fervently and to entrust your friend to the Lord's care, resting in His goodness and sovereignty. Keep seeking the Lord in His Word and in prayer, and keep loving your friend with the love Christ has shown us.

We heard the urgency and tenderness in your prayer for your friend, and we are joining you in bringing him before the Father.

Missing a close friend leaves a real ache. Friendship is one of God's good gifts for support and comfort, and when distance comes, whether through a move, a new calling like life with the monks, or simply time apart, that sense of loneliness can settle in deeply. It is understandable to keep asking God to watch over him and to wonder what the future of the friendship will be.

In this season, one steady step that often helps is not to carry the longing alone. We encourage you to stay rooted in community while you pray. Keep seeking the Lord in prayer for your friend's wellbeing and for God's direction in both of your lives, and share this burden with a trusted pastor or a believing friend who can pray with you face to face and walk with you through the waiting. If an appropriate and respectful way to express care to your friend remains open, a simple, kind note letting him know you are praying for him can be a grace without putting pressure on his path.

Father, we lift this dear friend to You and we lift our brother who misses him. You know where his friend is and what You are doing in his life. Grant comfort in the loneliness, wisdom for each next step, and peace in trusting Your good will. Draw them both closer to Yourself and keep them in Your care. In Jesus' mighty name, amen.

Your earnest and repeated prayer for your friend has been heard, and I join my own supplication with yours before the throne of grace. There is a peculiar sorrow in being parted from one whom the heart has loved, and that sorrow is not strange to our Lord.

You feel alone in this separation, and you must know that Jesus Christ Himself entered into that loneliness in its deepest measure. He was left alone just when most, as Man, He needed human sympathy, and His friends forsook Him and fled. Sin is a separating thing, and when He was made the Sin Bearer His friends must leave Him. He knows what it is to be forsaken, and His brave spirit stood at bay alone when all the dogs of hell raged around Him. Therefore He is able to sympathize with you in this hour of grief, and to be that Friend who proves His friendship by laying down His life for His friends.

Take comfort also from the case of Peter. Peter was down, but he was soon up again, and his story is rather his restoration than his fall. The Lord had prayed for him, and that prayer prevailed. Though Peter denied Him, the Lord turned and looked upon Peter, and that look severed him from the crowd and broke his heart into a thousand pieces with grief that he should have been false to such a Friend. That same look is full of saving power still. If your friend has wandered, or has been drawn aside, remember that Christ intercedes for His own and is mighty to restore. He can uplift a soul from among the siftings where Satan has thrown him, and bring bone to his bone again, that what was dry and scattered may live.

Yet let your hope rest not in monks nor in any other mediator, but in Christ alone. He is the God of Peace who has on His part prepared everything that is necessary for a perfect reconciliation. God has committed unto us the word of reconciliation, and that word is that reconciliation with God is by Jesus Christ alone, who died, the Just for the unjust, to bring us to God. No grave of grief can hold the immortal joy of a believer, for like the Lord who gave it, it shall never see corruption. If we would know true friendship with Christ, it must be reciprocal. He reveals Himself to His people and His people tell out their hearts to Jesus, and obedience is an essential of that friendship, for we prove we are His friends if we do whatsoever He commands.

I will pray for you and for your friend according to the wisdom and mercy of God.

O Lord our God, Thou hast seen the tears and heard the cry of this longing heart. Thou knowest the loneliness of separation and the grief of absence. Look in mercy upon this dear one and upon the friend for whom prayer is made. If it be Thy holy will, work reconciliation and restoration, and bring them again into fellowship in a way that honours Christ. Above all, draw each heart into closer friendship with Jesus, that there may be daily communion with Him and cheerful obedience to His will. Let neither trust in any arm of flesh, but let both find perfect peace in being at peace with God through the blood of Thy Son. Grant comfort to the lonely, restoration to the wandering, and let Thy will be done, for Thou hast prepared all things needful for our peace. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who alone is our reconciliation and our Friend, Amen.
