Healing

Your request for healing has been heard and we are praying for you in the name of Jesus.

We bring your body before the Lord because He cares about your physical needs. The gospel shows Jesus healing every kind of sickness and disease among the people, and Matthew under the guidance of the Holy Spirit connects that to the prophecy of Isaiah that He Himself bore our infirmities and carried our sicknesses. When Jesus gave the bread at the table and said this is My body broken for you, He was pointing to that same costly bearing of our need. That gives us confidence to ask Him for physical healing as well as for forgiveness and spiritual restoration.

At the same time we want to help you see what Scripture does and does not promise. The verse that says I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in good health even as your soul prospers is not a declaration from God guaranteeing health to every believer. It is the loving wish of John for his friend Gaius. It is a beautiful prayer, and it does point to something true that we are learning more and more, that there is a real connection between the health of the soul and the health of the body. Proverbs says a merry heart does good like a medicine, and experience and science confirm that the state of our mind and heart affects our physical well being. So as we pray for your body we also pray for the prospering of your soul, for peace and joy and strength in Christ, which itself brings help to the body.

We believe God still heals today and that healing is for today. At the same time not every person is given the same gift, Scripture asks are all workers of miracles, do all have gifts of healing, and the expected answer is no. God distributes gifts among the members of the body as He wills. We also do not always understand why some are healed quickly and others are not, or why some healings are immediate and one healing in the gospels was gradual. Any true healing is from God, whether it comes in a moment or through the natural processes He has built into our bodies. The skill of doctors and the gradual recovery of the body are not less divine, for God created nature and the processes of nature.

We also want to free you from a heavy burden that is often taught incorrectly. Sickness is not automatically a sign of weak faith or spiritual failure. Good and faithful people suffer illness, and even the apostle Paul spoke of his own infirmity and said he would glory in it that the power of Christ might rest on him, and he left his fellow worker Trophimus behind because he was sick. That does not diminish our faith in God's power, it simply reminds us that God is sovereign and sometimes uses even seasons of sickness for His purposes while we continue to seek Him for healing.

So we pray for you now for a complete work of God in you, physical, emotional and spiritual. We ask the Lord who healed the leper, the servant of the centurion, Peter's mother in law and multitudes who were brought to Him, and who did not use His power to serve Himself but freely used it to serve others, to lay His hand upon you. We ask for His mercy whether through a sudden touch or through gradual restoration, and we trust Him with the outcome. We pray that He would lift fear and fill your heart with His peace, that your soul would prosper in His love, and that your body would be strengthened according to His will. We pray that you would know His presence each day and be drawn closer to Jesus through this trial.

Father, in the name of Jesus we lift this dear one to You. You know every sickness and pain in this body. You bore our infirmities and You understand our weakness. We ask You to bring healing as it pleases You, to restore health, to calm the heart and to make the soul strong in You. Give wisdom to those providing care and give patience and hope while waiting on You. Let Your will be done and let Christ be glorified in this life. Amen.
