The heaviest spiritual attack, the years of physical decay, the mind that cries out for death, all this declares the deep need of healing that only the tree of life can supply. And blessed be the name of the Lord God, the very leaves of that tree are for the healing of the nations. Not merely the grand doctrines, but the least things about Christ, the hem of His garment as it were, are full of healing virtue. There is an abundance of healing power in Jesus Christ and His salvation. Overwhelming evidence is before you in your own household, your husband’s extreme anger, his soul-sickness, and yet the leaves remain unfading, fresh as from Paradise, to change the life blood and make the nature other than it was before.
You cry out for healing and a positive outcome, for salvation and deliverance. Lay hold of this: healing and forgiveness are placed in happy conjunction. When the Lord Jesus healed the sick of the palsy, He said, "Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you." Pardon and healing were one. Sin is crucified by the same Cross which brings Atonement. All spiritual disease receives its deathblow when sin is forgiven. The soul diseases then receive a healing medicine. Therefore, for your husband, for your father, for your brother, for your own heart, ask to be forgiven and healing will come from the pardoning hand. The implanted device, the prescribed medicines, the case before the courts, these are but instruments, but the great conduit Head from which healing streams flow down is Christ alone.
Yet you describe a man who states daily his desire to be dead. This is the very mark of spiritual death, for man by nature, since the fall, is dead in trespasses and sins. No form of our flesh, no act of our flesh, can assist in the great spiritual work of quickening. If any of you shall come to spiritual life, it must be by the quickening of God’s Spirit, vouchsafed to you sovereignly through the good will of God the Father, not for any merits of your own, but entirely of His own abounding and infinite grace. Cry therefore to the Holy Spirit to intervene, to quicken what is dead, to command light to shine out of darkness. The least gleaning in the field of the Gospel is rich spiritual nutriment, stoop to gather it, keep your eyes ever upon Christ, and let no good thought drop to the ground.
Consider this also, that the sorrowing wife has a special promise in her grief. Let a sorrowing wife tell how an ungodly husband has sent her to her chamber with tears, but remember that God is the Husband of His people. He sets His special love upon them, communes with them most lovingly, and provides for them with a husband’s faithful care. As a husband reveals himself in love to his spouse, so does the Lord act toward His own. Is He not able, then, to bring healing into your marriage, to subdue that extreme anger, to restore the years the locust has eaten? His faithfulness is the foundation on which you may rest this heavy burden.
The spiritual transformation that is needed, from death to life, from despair to hope, from sickness to convalescence, is the work of God by His grace. The Sun of Righteousness has risen with healing in His wings. The Christian has no eyes for any but Christ, "looking unto Jesus." Bring every fractured piece of this case, the finances, the health, the legal entanglement, and lay it beneath that cross where pardon and healing flow together. The very point of the promise is that the Lord will strengthen the entire spiritual constitution, and He does it by drawing the soul to Himself alone. May your tongue cleave to the roof of your mouth before you cease pleading with Him, and may the Spirit work that moral and spiritual transformation which makes all things new.
