Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You ask for healing, protection, guidance, and breakthrough, and you do well to bring these before the throne of grace in Jesus’ name. But let me ask you: do you seek these gifts with a heart aflame with love? The Apostle makes it plain that if one possesses gifts of healing, prophecy, or even a faith that removes mountains, yet lacks love, it profits nothing. Before you plead for outward relief, plead first for that inward transformation which alone makes every blessing a true benefit.
Consider how often the word has fallen upon your ears and you have remained unchanged. Yet do not despair. A tree may withstand many blows and seem immovable, until a final stroke, building on all the others, brings it down. So it is with the soul. Continue in prayer, continue in hearing, and do not think that delay means denial. The One who has power both to punish and to heal knows the appointed hour.
And know this: not all receive the gift of healing. The Spirit distributes as He wills. Perhaps you will not receive that particular charism, but you may receive a far greater one, the clear-eyed understanding of His commands, the strength to endure trial, the guidance of a purified conscience. Do you listen to Scripture as if God Himself were exhorting you? When you ask for guidance, do you carefully examine what He has already spoken, not judging hastily but weighing all with patience, as Nicodemus counseled the mob that wanted to condemn without a hearing?
Take care also that your cries for breakthrough do not mask the pride of the Pharisee. He thanked God that he was not like other men, and his very prayer became his condemnation. How much worse, then, to go about parading your own needs as if you were more deserving than your neighbor? Humility must be the foundation of every petition.
Do, then, what you have resolved: ask for healing, protection, guidance, and breakthrough. But let your first and constant request be for that love which never fails. Then, whether you are healed or left to suffer, whether your path is smooth or thorny, you will have the protection that matters most, the keeping of your soul unto eternal life. In all things, receive the word as coming from God, and you will find that the very act of enduring peril for His sake becomes the breakthrough you sought.
