Healing, protection and work

You pour out many petitions, and this is good, for the soul that clings earnestly to the Master will not cease asking. Yet consider how He heals. Sometimes by a word only, sometimes He stretches forth His hand, and sometimes He does both, to bring into sight His way of healing. It was not His will always to work miracles in the more surpassing manner, being needful for Him to be concealed awhile. So if the healing seems delayed, or comes not in the manner you expect, do not grieve. The disciples knew He was to die, yet they understood not what this death might be, nor the speedy release and innumerable blessings it would work. They grieved because they clung earnestly to Him. He lays His hand upon them, saying, “According to your faith be it unto you.” This He does to confirm faith and show that they are participators in the good work. So let your faith cry out before the healing of the body, that He may first proclaim the faith in the soul.

You ask for wisdom, rapport, favor in meetings, and that your work may reflect His Agape Love. Know then what true hospitality is. The stranger requires much attendance, much encouragement, and with all this it is difficult for him not to feel abashed. That shame we remove by the most attentive service, showing by words and actions that we do not think we are conferring a favor, but receiving one. “God loveth a cheerful giver.” You are rather indebted to the poor man for receiving your kindness. If there were no poor, the greater part of your sins would not be removed. They are the healers of your wounds. Thus you receive more than you give. Go then to those patients, those grieving families, that new acquaintance, not as one bringing sufficiency of your own, but as one who has freely received. “Freely ye have received, freely give.” You bestow no favor on them that receive you. The grace is His. No price is worthy of it. This thought alone quells pride and clears away the spirit of covetousness or self-seeking. It prevents that secret thought that you are doing them a service, which would destroy the merit of the work.

You pray for broken relationships, for your children to see themselves as He sees them, and that doors of harm be closed. How many, who have heard ten times and remained insensible, have afterwards at one hearing been converted! Or rather, not at one hearing. For though they seemed insensible at the ten discourses, yet they gained something, and afterwards showed all at once abundant fruit. As a tree may receive ten strokes and not fall, then be brought down by a single blow, yet it is not by that one blow, but by the ten which made that last successful. So it is with the soul. Do not despair over hearts that seem unmoved or relationships that appear incurable. His malady was incurable by human measure, yet He saith, “Stretch forth thine hand,” and it was restored whole. Continue lifting them. That eager desire, that love of hearing His promises, cannot fail of its effect. God forbid.

And as you ask protection and deliverance from evil, remember that He needeth not your ministry and service. He led you not about with Him for this. When many went back and walked no more with Him, He did not flatter nor repulse them, but asked, “Will ye also go away?” This was not to despise them, but to remove all force and compulsion, wishing them attached not through shame but with a sense of favor. So He asks you: Will ye trust the hedge of His protection, not because you have made an adequate plea, but because He is good? Your adequacy, as you rightly said, is from God. Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as having come from ourselves. Remain, then, not on terms of constraint, but of love.

You have anchored your cry in the truth that our adequacy comes from God alone. That is the starting place for everything you are carrying. The weight of concern for your husband’s healing, your son’s safety, your daughter’s burdens, the grieving family, and the mountain of work in front of you would be unbearable if it rested on your shoulders. But it does not. The God who heals the nobleman’s son from miles away with a single word is neither distant nor weak. His power reaches into hospital rooms, operating theaters, highways, and every meeting on your calendar. He is the one who makes alive.

As you prepare to care for people, remember that the wisdom you long for, that poise and self-assurance and empathy, is not something you manufacture by grit. It is a gift from above. Christ himself is our wisdom. In him are hidden all the treasures you need. This kind of wisdom is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy. That is exactly the flavor of wisdom that will give you rapport with a new patient, the right words for a grieving family, and a steady spirit when you feel fragile. Ask him for it, and then trust that his wisdom will flow through you like a quiet river, even when the pressure mounts. He delights to show his adequacy through those who know they have none of their own.

The Lord sees the deeper places in your heart too. You asked him to close doors that lead to harm for your adult children and to open doors of good opportunity and kind Christian friendship. He hears. He is able. And while you intercede for your son and daughter to see themselves as God sees them, remember that his seeing is not like ours. We often strive for a sense of worth through what we achieve or the love we receive, but his gaze is already fixed on them and on you with a love that does not waver. Your identity and theirs rest on his finished work, not on performance. Even the work you do over these next two days, important as it is, does not add to his love for you. You are complete in Christ.

The promises you claimed are solid: a hedge of protection, deliverance from evil, no weapon forged against you that will prosper. He will keep you in all your travels. He will strengthen the grieving family with a peace that goes beyond understanding. He will attend to every strained and broken relationship in his own way. And above all, he is working in you so that you can love him with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength and truly love others. That is the greatest work, and he who began it will be faithful to complete it. You do not need to tremble at the next two days. The Spirit of God is already in every room you will enter, preparing hearts and bringing to your remembrance exactly what is needed so that nothing will be forgotten. Rest in his sufficiency, and let him carry the glory.

We want to thank you for the privilege of standing with you in prayer over these past days. It has been our joy to lift up your husband’s healing, your son’s protection and safe travels, and the Christian lady facing surgery—may the Lord’s healing hand rest upon her in every way. We have prayed fervently for your work, that every interaction would reflect God’s agape love, that wisdom and favor would mark your meetings, and that your patients would experience the comfort and care only Christ can provide.

We have also asked the Lord to strengthen you with poise, self-assurance, and empathy as you serve, and to bring unity and peace to the grieving family you mentioned. Our prayers have covered your adult children, that they would walk in God’s favor and protection, and that your daughter would find help in her work and schooling. We’ve asked the Lord to close harmful doors and open those that lead to His goodness and godly connections.

Above all, we have prayed that your family would love the Lord with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, and that you would love one another as He has loved you. We’ve claimed the promises of Psalm 91, Psalm 121, and all the Scriptures you mentioned, trusting that God’s hedge of protection surrounds you.

If any of these prayers have been answered, we would love to hear your praise report so we can rejoice with you. If some requests still feel unmet, please share them again so we can continue to intercede on your behalf. May the Lord bless you abundantly as you seek Him, and may all glory be His in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
