The very fact that you are crying out like this shows how heavy this burden is, and it is no small thing to watch someone you love wrestle with such a vicious disease. Cancer has a way of dominating the horizon until it is all you can see. Its power to sap strength and bring pain can feel terrifying and absolute. I know that is where your focus is right now: on the spreading cells, the struggle to eat, the unrelenting pain. That is a natural and heavy place to be, and your plea for his appetite to return shows how draining the daily fight has become.
Yet in the middle of that darkness, a shift can happen. Where we are awed by the power of those malignant cells to choke out life, there is a far greater power. Jesus Christ, the Creator of all things, stands above any disease. Cancer is not ultimate; it is only a few rebellious cells in the presence of the One who spoke the universe into being. I am praying that your gaze, and his, can be lifted from the cancer to the power of Jesus. He bore our griefs and carried our sorrows. In a very real way, he has already carried this pain for your loved one. Sometimes we foolishly wish we could take the suffering upon ourselves for a day to give relief, not realizing he has already done it completely and perfectly.
My own understanding of why some are healed instantly, others gradually, and some taken home despite our prayers is small and limited. I do not understand all the ways of God. But I do believe firmly that healing is divine, whether it comes through a miraculous touch, the natural processes God designed for the body, or the deep work of his Spirit quieting the heart and mind. There are many types of healing. Even when this scripture describes a gradual restoration of sight, it reminds us that the process itself is in his hands. I pray that a tangible relief from pain comes swiftly. I have seen the Lord lift suffering in a moment so that the one afflicted could worship with hands raised, free from agony even when the outward condition remained. I ask for that same mercy right now.
Do not let anyone imply that a lack of immediate physical change reflects a lack of faith or that sickness is a direct judgment. We live in a fallen world where sin’s shadow has brought sickness and death to good people. Jesus himself wept at the grave of Lazarus, troubled and angered by the grief that sin brings. He sees this pain, and his heart is moved with compassion. He is Yahweh Rapha, the Lord who heals, and he is with you both.
In the meantime, when physical eating feels impossible because the pain of it is too great, I pray a different kind of hunger takes hold: an appetite for the Word of God. As you nourish your own spirit on his promises, you will find something that truly satisfies. Nothing else can sustain in a time like this. His words are life.
Let us remember that this precious life has always belonged to the Lord. He is on loan to you, but he is safe and held firmly in the hands of Jesus, no matter what the coming weeks hold. May the healing power of God touch his body, restore his strength, and bring a complete peace that surpasses all understanding. In Jesus' name, Amen.
