Chrysostom
Humble Servant of All
God hears the cry of a mother’s heart, and He is not deaf to the pains of your son. But take care that in your eagerness to cure the body, you do not let the soul grow dull. For when the flesh suffers, we run to every physician; yet when the soul is unwell, we delay. The ailments of eyes and stomach and mind are streams; the fountain is the heart’s faith. Seek first that he believe in the Son of God, not merely as a healer or a king, but as Very God, able to do all things. Remember the blind men: Christ did not say, “I will entreat the Father,” but “Believe ye that I am able to do this?” Their faith drew out His power. So here, let your son’s faith, and your own, cling to Him entirely.
Do not let the size of the afflictions make you slothful in hope. Lamentation itself can be medicine when it is poured out before the Lord; He uses even our tears to amend us. For Christ is the firstfruits of our nature, sanctifying our sufferings and offering them up. If He suffered to make you a child of God, then every pain may be turned to that very end. The body’s healing may come swiftly or slowly, but the soul’s health must be the first aim.
And for the money to pay doctors, do not accuse God’s care or call the needy impostor. Many are impoverished not by laziness but by shipwrecks, lawsuits, sickness, and a host of unseen trials. The Father who feeds the birds will open His hand. Give thanks in every circumstance, and let your son learn to love nothing more than the commandments of Christ. For he that heareth and keepeth them loveth both Son and Father. That is the root of a thriving life, not length of days alone. The judgment is already passing for those who trust Him; His delay in answer is not indifference but lovingkindness, giving space to repent and draw near. Pray on, then, with boldness and patience. He who healed the sick without price will not forsake you now.
