Your request for healing touches the very core of our human experience. We feel acutely the groaning of these bodies, the limitations and the pain that come from conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure. It is not wrong to cry out for deliverance; you are a living soul housed in a frame that is wonderfully made yet profoundly broken by the fall. The struggle you face is a vivid picture of what happens when the body’s appetites and malfunctions begin to rule, and the mind becomes occupied with the desperate, relentless needs of the flesh.
The foundation for your deliverance, and mine, lies in a truth more vital than any dietary plan or medication, good as those may be. It rests on the blood. From the beginning, God declared that the life of the flesh is in the blood, and He gave it to make atonement. Under the old covenant, a high priest had to enter the holy place year after year with the blood of goats and bulls, a ceaseless, temporary covering. But Christ has come as our great High Priest. He did not enter an earthly model with the blood of animals; He entered the heavens themselves with His own blood, once and for all. There is no remission without the shedding of blood, and His perfect sacrifice has been made.
This same blood was a token of protection for the Israelites in Egypt. God declared, "When I see the blood, I will pass over you." The death sentence that hangs over all flesh was halted at the threshold of that blood-marked home. The ultimate sentence on the body is death itself, but for those covered by the blood of Christ, death has been transformed. We know that when this earthly tent, this aching and struggling body, is dissolved, we have a building from God, a body eternal in the heavens. That is the final deliverance, but the power of that blood works now.
Think on what we remember at the Lord's table. Jesus took bread and said, "This is my body broken for you." When was His body broken? Though not a bone of His was shattered, His body was broken through the scourging, the thorns, the nails. By His stripes, by that broken body, we were healed. There is healing provided in the suffering of Jesus, and we must discern His body rightly. To draw near to Him, asking for healing without embracing the full reality of His sacrifice, is to miss the source of that healing. The blood and the broken body are the channels through which life and wholeness flow.
Your mind is the central territory where this battle is fought. A human is a trinity of body, mind, and spirit. Created with the spirit uppermost, in fellowship with God, the mind was meant to be filled with the things of the Spirit. But now the body, with its drives and pain, often seizes control and forces the mind to be a slave to its demands. When the body rules, you have what Scripture calls the mind of the flesh, and that mind is death and enmity against God. The cry, "O wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from this body of death?" is not just a cry about physical death, but about this very captivity. Are your thoughts consumed by sugar levels and blood pressure readings? The natural man’s mind is constantly occupied with body needs. But there is a higher law. You are called to present your very body, with all its weaknesses, as a living sacrifice to God. Do not be conformed to the pattern of this anxious, flesh-obsessed world. Instead, be transformed by the renewing of your mind. As you fix your mind on the Spirit, on the finished work of Christ, on His indwelling peace, your mind becomes the mind of the Spirit, which is life and peace. Even as your body groans, your inner man can be still.
And do not think you walk this path alone. Your body has many members, each essential, and when one part suffers, the whole body suffers with it. So too, you are a vital member of the body of Christ. Your struggle is not a private one; it is felt by the whole body. And that same body is God’s provision for you. Through the prayers, the encouragement, and the practical service of other believers, the healing power of Jesus is ministered. You have a part to fill that no one else can, and you need the parts that others provide. Let us labor together for a unity of mind and purpose, not being haughty or isolated, so that the body of Christ can function in wholeness, bringing His powerful, healing influence to bear on every suffering member, including you.
