Healing, anxiety

Thank you for opening your heart and sharing this request. It is good to thank God that He hears our prayers, and it is right to bring both your body and your anxious thoughts to Him.

Scripture gives us confidence to do that. Matthew, writing by the Holy Spirit, points to what happened when crowds came to Jesus with the sick and those oppressed, and he says this fulfilled what Isaiah had spoken, that He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses. Isaiah's prophecy is often thought of only in terms of forgiveness of sin, but Matthew applies it also to physical sickness. When Jesus broke the bread and said this is My body which is broken for you, He was inviting us to remember that His suffering was for our whole need, spiritual and physical.

At the same time the Bible keeps us from presuming that God will remove every affliction instantly in the way we ask. Paul prayed three times for the thorn in his flesh, that messenger of Satan that buffeted him, and the answer was not removal but grace to endure. Not everyone is given the same gift of healing, and the body has many members with different functions. There is much about healing that we do not fully understand, why some are healed quickly and others are not, or why healing sometimes comes gradually. The one gradual healing recorded in the ministry of Jesus reminds us that God does not always work in the same way. All true healing is from Him, whether it comes in a moment or through the natural processes He built into our bodies. Those processes themselves are divine, because He created them. He also heals emotionally and mentally, mending the scars and wounds we carry inside, and that is often part of our restoration.

God is still able and He still cares about our physical needs. Jesus did not use His miraculous power to meet His own need, but He freely used it to meet the needs of others, and He continues to have power over sickness, over the created world, and over the spiritual realm. We can therefore ask Him for healing today with faith, while trusting His wisdom and love with the outcome and avoiding any show or pretense that turns healing into a spectacle.

Your struggle with anxiety is also close to God's heart. There is a real connection between the health of our soul and the health of our body. The proverb says a merry heart does good like a medicine, and we are learning how much our inner state affects us physically. Anxiety often grows when we feel trapped by pressures, whether in relationships, finances, or spiritual battles. The psalmist knew this feeling and spoke to his own soul, asking why are you cast down and disquieted within me, and then he answered himself, hope in God. When God seems to have been left out of the equation, fear and heaviness take over. When we put Him back in, when we hope in Him and rehearse His power and deliverance, the impossible begins to look different because He is present in the situation.

So we pray for you now. Father, in the name of Jesus we bring this dear one to You with thanksgiving that You hear prayer. You know the needs of this body and the weight of anxiety. We ask that You would touch and heal according to Your perfect will, whether through a sudden touch or through the gradual healing You have placed within us, and that You would bring deep healing to mind and emotions as well. Lift the burden of anxiety and give a quiet and steady heart. Help hope to be anchored in You again, and let Your peace guard heart and mind. Give wisdom for caring for the body and for nurturing the inner life, that soul and body may be strengthened together. We trust Your goodness and Your power, and we rest in Your love through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
