Healing, anxiety

Thank you for sharing your heart and for your trust in the Lord to hear prayer. Your request for healing in your body and for freedom from anxiety is precious to God, and it is right to bring both needs to Him in the name of Jesus.

Scripture shows us that Jesus cares about physical suffering. Matthew, writing by the Holy Spirit, points to what happened when crowds were brought to Jesus at Peter's house in the evening, and he connects it to the prophecy in Isaiah that He bore our sicknesses and carried our infirmities. That prophecy is often limited to spiritual healing only, but Matthew applies it to physical healing as well. When Jesus broke the bread and said this is my body which is broken for you, He was pointing to that same truth, that His suffering was for the whole person. He used His miraculous power not for Himself but for the needs of others, healing the leper, the centurion's servant, Peter's mother in law and multitudes, showing His authority over the physical realm.

At the same time the Bible teaches us that we cannot presume God will grant physical healing in every case just as we ask. Paul prayed three times concerning his thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan that buffeted him, and God did not remove it. Scripture also asks, do all have gifts of healing, and the expected answer is no. The body has many members and gifts are distributed as God wills. I believe strongly that God still heals today and that healing is for today, yet there is much about healing I do not fully understand, why some are healed quickly and others are not. There is only one gradual healing recorded in the ministry of Jesus, but we see that God often works through process. The healing processes He has placed within our bodies are divine, because He created nature and its processes. And healing is not only physical. God also brings emotional and mental healing, mending wounds and scars within.

There is a close connection between the health of the soul and the health of the body. John wrote to Gaius that he wished above all things that he might prosper and be in health even as his soul prospers. That is not a blanket promise that everyone will be healed, but it is a loving wish that reveals a real correlation. Proverbs says a merry heart does good like a medicine, and we are learning how true that is, that the condition of the inner life affects the body. Anxiety and pressure from relationships, finances and spiritual battles can weigh on both.

You mentioned anxiety, and that is a burden many know. The psalmist asked himself, why are you cast down, why are you disquieted within me, and then he answered his own soul, hope in God. Often when we are filled with anxiety we have, without meaning to, left God out of the equation and the situation feels trapped and impossible. The answer is to put God back in, to hope in Him. When He is factored back into the situation, what seemed impossible takes on a different light because we remember His power and His care. Feeding the spiritual life through prayer and trust strengthens us, even while the physical man may feel weak.

So I will pray for you that God will touch your body according to His wise and loving will, whether through a sudden work or through the gradual and natural processes He has ordained, and that He will bring deep deliverance from anxiety as you set your hope more fully on Him. May He give you a merry heart and a soul that prospers in His peace, and may you know His presence as you keep looking to Jesus who bore your infirmities and who lives to intercede for you.

Father, in the name of Jesus I bring this dear one before You. You know the need in the body and the weight of anxiety. Lay Your healing hand upon this life as You will, and grant peace that guards heart and mind. Help hope to rise again in You, and let Your strength be known in weakness. Amen.
