The longing for wisdom and for bodily healing is a good longing, if it springs from a soul that truly seeks after God and not after the praises of men. You ask for a wise heart to be a good steward. This is excellent, but know that true wisdom is not the wisdom of this world, which comes to nothing. The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, full of mercy and good fruits, and it is found only by those who empty themselves of pride and sit at the feet of Scripture. You have quoted the proverb, "Walk with the wise, and you will become wise." Who are the wise? Not those who speak eloquently or know the theories of the philosophers, but those whose hearts are acquainted with the Word of God, whose mouths speak kindness, and whose hands work righteousness. Be diligent, then, to read the Scriptures and to sit in the assembly of the faithful, for there the Spirit speaks. Pray not with vain repetitions, thinking you will be heard for your many words, but with a contrite heart cry out in the secret chamber of your soul, even as Moses, who uttered no sound, yet God said, "Why do you cry to Me?" Such a silent cry pierces the heavens more than a trumpet.
As for your bodily afflictions, the tooth, the eyes, the leg, the lumps, the inward parts, remember that our Lord Jesus Christ is not weak, nor does He need our long prayers as though He were ignorant or unwilling. Did He not say, "I knew that You hear Me always"? He spoke thus, not because He required help, but to teach us that He acts together with the Father. So when you pray for healing, do not imagine that you must persuade Him with a flood of words. Approach Him with faith, and say from the heart, "Lord, if You will, You can make me clean." And if the pain is sharp and you can hardly speak, let your suffering itself be a prayer, like the blood of Abel crying out from the ground. Yet, do not demand healing as though God owed you a debt, but submit to His will, for He knows what medicine the soul needs. Perhaps bodily sickness is permitted that you may learn patience, or that the world may see a living witness of faith. In all this, seek first the healing of the soul, that you may walk worthy of the Lord, increasing in the knowledge of God, bearing fruit in every good work. For what gain is it if the body is whole but the soul is diseased with sin?
Therefore, let your prayer be joined with almsgiving and repentance, for these are the feet and hands of wisdom. Sing psalms in your heart, even when you are in the marketplace or lying on a bed of pain. Give thanks before you see the answer, as Christ did, trusting that the Father hears always. And do not neglect to seek wisdom from those who are truly wise in the faith, that you may become their companion. May you be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that the Word of God may be fulfilled in you, and that, whether in health or in sickness, you may glorify Him in body and spirit.
