You stand before the Lord with a double handful of requests, some for the body that aches and others for the soul that longs. There is a wisdom tooth crying out, your eyes strain, the left leg and hip carry a burden, lumps press where they ought not, and the inward parts that digest your daily bread are troubled. And at the same time your heart reaches for wisdom, for a steward’s careful understanding, for a soul poured out in prayer and a mind deeply taught in the Word. Do not imagine that this mixture of pains and holy desires is strange to your Lord. It was no different in Peter’s house, where a great fever raged, and yet the very air of the sickroom became a throne-room the moment Jesus stepped inside. He did not turn from the house because there was sickness in it; He brought His healing presence into the very thick of it. And so He will do with you. The things that worry your body are not walls that keep Him out, they are windows through which His mercy can enter.
Think of the Tree of Life that John saw in the heavenly city, growing on either side of the crystal river, its leaves given for the healing of the nations. In paradise there was a single tree, but in the realm of redemption the river is lined with them, healing remedy upon remedy, as if God would make it abundantly plain that there is no scarcity in His pharmacy. He has balm enough for every ache you have named. The same hands that were nailed to the tree of Calvary hold leaves that can quiet a throbbing jaw, clear a dim eye, smooth away a swelling, and restore the belt of the intestines to peace. He made your body; He knows all its hidden corridors. You do not trouble Him by bringing your list. A physician is not annoyed when the sick tell him exactly where the pain sits. And you speak to the Great Physician, who does not need you to explain, yet loves to hear your voice.
And that other request, the one for a wise and understanding heart, runs very close to His own heart. Solomon was never more pleasing to God than when he asked not for riches or long life, but for a discerning mind to govern rightly. You seek to walk with the wise, because you have read that he who walks with wise men shall be wise. But who is wiser than Christ? To walk with Him in prayer and in the Word is to sit at the feet of Wisdom itself. As you pour out your whole soul before Him, you are already doing what the godly have always done, and the promise is sure: He will guide the meek in judgment, and teach the meek His way. He will not leave you to fumble through your duties as a steward. The Holy Spirit who made Luke both a physician and a faithful historian will mold you into whatever shape of service He has appointed, using your very aches to tenderize your heart, and your hunger for the Word to strengthen your inner man.
Sickness is no strange envoy. Even in the house of an apostle a fever could burn. The body is still tied to the mortality that sin introduced, but Christ has drawn the sting. The leaves of the tree are for healing, and the fruit is for life. While you wait, remember that the same voice which said to the paralyzed man, “Your sins are forgiven,” said shortly after, “Take up your bed and walk.” He first settled the weightier matter, then dealt with the body’s frame. So He is already giving you a wise heart even as we pray for the leg, the lumps, the stomach. Your soul’s healing and your body’s mending are both in the same pierced hands.
Let us lift this case to Him now, for He is near.
Lord Jesus, You are the Tree of Life whose leaves never wither and whose fruit never fails. Look upon Your child who stands in need of Your healing touch. We ask for every part that troubles, the upper wisdom tooth, the eyes, the entire left leg and the left side of the pelvis, the ball in the thigh and the one beneath the skin of the abdomen, the stomach and the intestines and all the hidden passages of the body. Speak the word, Lord, and make them whole, that this frame may serve You again without hindrance. And give, oh give a wise and understanding heart, that this life may be a faithful stewardship of all You have entrusted. Let the Word of God dwell richly, and bring this dear soul into the fellowship of the wise who walk in Your fear and learn of You. Hold this one steady when pain clouds the view, and let the peace that passes understanding keep heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Amen.
