Chrysostom
Humble Servant of All
Your prayer for healing and peace is right and good, yet hear how the Giver of peace bestows it. The peace that surrounds you is not given where there is war in the soul, nor where you fight against your brother. Be at peace with all men, for nothing so much delights God as to remember no evil. When you strive with your neighbor, you subvert peace and wrong joy more grievously than any theft, for the kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. So pursue this peace, and you will be called a child of God.
You ask deliverance from evil. The Lord delivered Paul from the lion’s mouth, yet Paul still sought deliverance from every evil work, that he might not depart with condemnation. The greater rescue is from sin, from the devil’s jaws. Afflictions and calamities are indeed called evils, but they are not wickedness; they are the scourges that come from above, which God alone can turn to your gain. If He permits trouble, it is to make you cling to Him, not to destroy you.
Healing comes when you cultivate not one virtue but all: careful hearing of God’s word, fortitude, contempt of worldly things. The fear of the Lord must be taught; keep your tongue from evil, depart from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it. Then the curse is lifted, and you receive the Spirit of adoption, becoming a son through Christ.
When you pray for protection, examine your own heart. The evil speaker disgraces himself first; good works first gladden the doer. So let no quarrelsomeness, no remembrance of wrongs, corrupt the peace you seek. If division must come, let it be separation from sin, not from the brother for whom Christ died. For there is an evil concord that leads to ruin, and a good disagreement that brings truth. But as much as lies in you, be at peace, imitating the Son of God. Then the peace you request will fill your house, and your healing will be more than bodily. You will taste the joy of the kingdom, delivered from every evil work, and your thanksgiving will rise as a pure offering.
