We join you in thanking God for the honesty of Psalm 102:2 and for the way you have laid out its meaning so clearly. We too have known seasons when it felt as though God had hidden His face, when prayers seemed to hit the ceiling and distress made His presence feel distant. That feeling is not uncommon among God's people. David cried in Psalm 27:9, Do not hide your face from me. Put not your servant away in anger. Even Jesus in His humanity quoted Psalm 22:1 on the cross, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me. The feeling is real, but we have learned to handle it not by trusting our feelings but by clinging to what God has promised in His Word.

Your reflection rightly brings together Psalm 102:2 and Isaiah 59:2, and that balance is so important. Psalm 102:2 shows the heart of the afflicted believer crying out, Do not hide your face from me when I am in distress. Turn your ear to me. When I call, answer me quickly. We handle that feeling by doing what the psalmist did, by pouring out our heart honestly before the Lord, by returning to the Bread of Heaven and the Word of Life. Jesus said in John 6:35, I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. And John 1:1 and John 1:14 remind us that the Word became flesh and lived among us. When we feel God is hidden, we open the Word, because Jesus is the Word of God made visible and approachable. We confess sin quickly, as 1 John 1:9 promises, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. We remind ourselves of His unfailing promise in Hebrews 13:5, I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you, and in Deuteronomy 31:8, Yahweh, it is he who does go before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid, neither be dismayed. And we wait with hope, as Lamentations 3:22-23 declares, It is because of Yahweh's loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn't fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

That is how we encourage you and ourselves to handle the darkness, not by denying the pain but by bringing it urgently and honestly to the throne of grace. Hebrews 4:16 invites us, Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need. Romans 8:38-39 assures us that neither death, nor life, nor any created thing, will be able to separate us from God's love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Feelings may tell us He is far, but the cross tells us He has come near.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You do not hide Your face forever from Your children, and that through the blood of Jesus the wall of separation has been torn down. We thank You that You invite us to call and You promise to answer. When we are in distress and we feel alone, turn Your ear to us and answer us quickly according to Your mercy. Forgive us for our iniquities where we have built barriers between us and You, cleanse us from all unrighteousness, and help us to walk in spirit and truth. Teach us to feed daily on Christ, the true Bread of Heaven and the living Word, so that our faith rests not on fleeting feelings but on Your faithful promises. Restore to us the joy of Your presence, shine Your face upon us, and let us reflect Your compassionate and listening heart to others who are hurting. Thank you for asking this so honestly. Many of us know that quiet, heavy sense that heaven feels silent, even when we are praying as sincerely as we know how.

In our own seasons like that, what has helped most is not trying to push the feeling away, but bringing the feeling itself to God in plain words. Prayer at its heart is simply conversation and staying near, not finding perfect words. Even a brief, honest God are you there, I need you today counts. Over time that honest turning keeps our hearts soft when we might otherwise pull back.

It also helps not to carry it alone. Letting one trusted believer know you are in that dry place, and letting them pray with you, can make a real difference. Knowing others are praying for you by name and hearing someone voice your need out loud with you reminds you that you are not forgotten.

If this feeling lingers, keep a simple rhythm of showing up. A short morning prayer, a few minutes with the Word, and a regular gathering with other believers, not as a duty to earn nearness but as a way to remain near.

There are seasons when the soul cries with the psalmist, Do not hide your face from me when I am in distress, and it seems as though heaven were as brass above us. This feeling is not strange to the people of God. The prayer you have quoted, Psalm 102, is called the prayer of the afflicted when he is overwhelmed, and many of the best of saints have poured out just such a plaint in the night.

You ask how such a feeling is to be handled, and the answer must be sought in the truth of God rather than in the ebb and flow of our own emotions. There are two things to be held together.

First, it is true that sin makes a separation. The prophet declares plainly, your iniquities have built barriers between you and your God, and your sins have made Him hide His face from you so that He does not listen. This is not a matter of feeling but of fact. God must know our foolishness, for He is infinite in knowledge and holy in nature, and nothing is hidden from His eyes. Every sin, though time may have covered its remembrance in our own minds, is present to Him as if committed at this moment. When we walk in unconfessed sin, or love that which He hates, we cannot wonder if communion is broken and His face seems hidden. His Spirit is vexed by rebellion, and even His own children, whom He loves, He will chasten, for you only have I known of all the families of the earth, therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.

Second, it is gloriously true that God has provided a covering for sin. It is the glory of God to cover sin, not to leave it exposed to His wrath. He looks upon His Son Jesus bearing our sin on the cross, and for His sake He says, I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions. The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. What the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God has done by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh. Therefore the barrier is broken down through faith in Christ alone. There is no other name by which we may come, and no other way to have peace with God.

How then should you handle the darkness when God seems to hide Himself.

Do as the psalmist did, pour out your heart with honesty and urgency before the throne of grace. Turn your ear to me, when I call answer me quickly. God ordains prayer that we may have fellowship with Him in affliction. Do not let the sense of distance keep you from prayer, let it drive you to it.

Search your heart in the light of His Word and confess any post salvation sin quickly, that you may return into fellowship with Him. If there be any known sin indulged, any barrier of iniquity, forsake it and repent, for there cannot be pardon where there is not a renewal of the heart by His sovereign grace.

Cling to Christ and His finished work rather than to your feelings. Peace is a fact before it is a feeling. We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ because He was made sin for us who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. Your feelings may say God has forgotten, but His Word says He has cast all your sins behind His back.

Remember also that the Lord has His hidden ones. There are times when He hides His people away for safety and for quiet communion, not in anger but in love. The more of trial you have to endure, the more of communion you shall have to enjoy, if you wait upon Him. In the clear blue heaven of fellowship with God, above the clouds of trouble, the soul may yet look down and defy all assaults.

So come today in God's appointed way. Be sorry for your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ alone for salvation, and ask for mercy in His name. He never turned away any who came to Him in distress when He dwelt among men, and He will not hide His face from any poor sinner who now comes to Him by the blood of the cross.

May the Lord hear your cry, cover your sin in Christ, and lift upon you the light of His countenance, and give you to know that though weeping may endure for a night, joy cometh in the morning.
