There are few things more wearying than to be hunted by malice while you are simply trying to go about your daily labor. You rise, you set your hand to honest work, and there they are again, watching, whispering, prodding. It wears a groove in the soul, this constant low pressure of ill will. And you have rightly named the source, for behind every persistent campaign of spite against a child of God there stands that old serpent, the enemy of souls. He cannot touch your eternal inheritance, so he nips at your heels and sets others to nip alongside him. Do not be surprised that it should be so; your Master was watched with jealous eyes wherever He went, and the servant is not above his Lord.
But hear this and let it steady you: you are not under the power of the dark one. He may harass, but he does not hold the deed to your life. You have been transferred, plucked right out of his dominion and planted in the kingdom of God's dear Son. The grip he once had on you is broken clean off. He can bark and he can snap, but the chain is not in his hand; it is in the hand of Him who loves you with an everlasting love. When the enemy sends people to trouble you, he is like a general who has already lost the war sending skirmishers to annoy the occupying army. They can make noise, but they cannot reverse the outcome. Christ has settled that.
Think of it this way: if a band of brigands stood outside your house shouting threats, you would not conclude that the house was theirs. You would bolt the door, you might call for help, but you would know that the deed was safe in your strongbox and the title was unassailable. So it is with you. The deed to your soul is kept in the pierced hand of Jesus, and no accusation, no conspiracy, no sustained campaign of petty cruelty can overturn it. The harassment is real, and I would not speak lightly of it, it hurts, it distracts, it makes the day feel long and the night longer, but it is all on the outside. The citadel of your heart, where Christ has taken up residence, is not breached.
And do you know what your enemies are doing unwittingly? They are driving you closer to the well. When the noise of the archers was loudest in the places of drawing water, that was when the people of God bent their heads and drank more deeply. The world is a wilderness, yes, and hostile voices can make it feel doubly so, but right here in the dusty ground beneath your feet there is a spring that never fails. It is the Lord Jesus Himself, all your fresh springs are in Him. Whenever you turn to Him, even with a heart that is sore and a mind that is distracted, you drink and are refreshed. No enemy can stop up that well. They may stand around it and shout, but they cannot foul the water that Christ gives, and they cannot snatch the cup from your hand. So drink, dear friend. Drink deeply and often.
As for their removal, you have asked rightly. God works deliverance, but He often works it through means. There is an arrow to be shot, and the bow is in your hand. Prayer is the drawing of that bowstring, and faith is the hand of the Lord upon your hand steadying the aim. You are not left to manage these people by your own wits or your own endurance. The living God, who sees what is done in secret and knows every unkind word spoken against you, will deal with them in His own time and His own way. It may be that He will soften them; it may be that He will simply remove them from your path as one sweeps a stone from the roadway. Either way, the outcome is His business. Your business is to keep your eyes on Him and not on them. A man who stares too long at the waves will soon feel his stomach turn, but a man who looks to the lighthouse steadies himself and finds his course again.
And when the deliverance comes, and it will come, for the Lord does not leave His own to be devoured, you will look back and see that you did not merely escape with your skin. You came out with silver and gold. That is the way of our God: He brings His people forth with gain. The very trial that seemed so pointless and so cruel will have worked in you a patience you could not have learned any other way, a nearness to Christ that prosperity never teaches, and a quiet confidence that the world cannot give and cannot take away. Not one feeble soul among His redeemed; even the weakest comes out with treasures piled high.
Let me leave you with this, and ask you to hold it up before your mind like a candle in a dark room: you shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. Your story is not going to end with defeat. The God who has begun a good work in you will carry it through to completion, and no pack of hellhounds can stop Him. You are perfectly safe until the work He has given you to do is done. No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue that rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord.
Father, our Father, who sees what is done in the shadows and calls every secret thing to account, look now upon this dear one who is worn with the constant noise of the foe. You are the shield, the glory, and the lifter up of the head. Stretch out Your hand and still the tumult. Let Your peace, which passes all understanding, garrison this heart and mind. And in Your own wise time and way, bring about a deliverance so complete that this season will be remembered only for the sweetness of Your presence in it. We ask it in the mighty name of Jesus, who has overcome the world. Amen.
