The very scope of this request, encompassing co-residents, caregivers, family, friends, and even enemies, calls to mind the mighty intercessors of old. Never was there a mightier prophet than Moses, and never one more intensely earnest in intercessory prayer. Remember the words of Samuel, “God forbid that I should sin against the Lord, in ceasing to pray for you.” To bring such a multitude before the throne of grace is no small thing; it is the sweetest prayer God ever hears, for the prayer of Christ Himself is of this character. Do not question it. Intercessory prayer has stayed plagues, it has raised the dead, and eternity alone shall reveal how many souls it has instrumentally saved. It is exceedingly prevalent.
Yet, you cannot pray well for those you know nothing about. This great catalogue of souls should drive you to a sympathetic knowledge of them, and that knowledge will knit your hearts together in love as the heart of one man. Prayer is the most essential thing in turning sinners from the error of their ways, and it will fit you for becoming God's instrument in their lives. There are many hidden ones, strangers even to their own mother’s children, hidden away in ungodly homes or in the dens of vice. Breathe a prayer for them now. The Lord has some very strange people among His chosen ones, and He will have His own. But hope that He will have them through your instrumentality. Your prayer is the means by which He stoops from the highest Heaven, reaches down to the gates of the deepest Hell, and pulls these accursed ones out of the pit.
And as for the will of God, which you so rightly invoke, let it be the axle of your universe. As surely as God's will is the great heart of providence, so in grace rest assured that He is King, having mercy on whom He will have mercy. The new birth, the sanctification, the perseverance of the saints, all rest upon His will. There is a revealed will which we must not violate, and a hidden purpose to which we must bow. Put yourself entirely at God’s disposal, and say, “I will go, I will continue, I will buy, I will sell, if the Lord wills, that is to say, if by doing so I can be helping to answer that prayer, ‘Your will be done in earth, as it is in Heaven.’” Our best profit is in doing God's will.
But do not let a cold Calvinism freeze your knees. Get down, Sir! Some say, “If they are to be saved, they will be saved,” and act as if it is no particular business of theirs. Away with such sloth! The sense of need, that inward craving which presses you to pray, is a sure sign of coming blessing. When God gives His people to exercise an incessant pleading, He will cause them to stir up His strength and make bare His arm. If it seems the darkest hour, the day will soon dawn. Continue much in prayer, even when liberty seems absent. Our Lord will give the real thing, not a stone for bread.
And what of past deliverances? Did He hear your prayer when you were in the jaw of the lion? Then tell others He will hear their voice too. If He saved you, He can save anybody, those co-residents, those caregivers, even those enemies. Tell them to pray. Tell them of a dear Saviour. Let this great intercession be your answer to God’s love for you, a love that was fixed upon you long before the world was made. He has loved you, He does love you, and He will love you forever. Let your heart be glad in this, and then go forth to plead for the multitude, that there may soon be a sound of an abundance of rain.
