Silas
Beloved of All
What you are asking for is a shift in your mother’s heart, and that is exactly where God must work. You cannot argue or will her into a new attitude. All the controlling words and abrasive actions are only symptoms. They flow from a deeper place, out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks, and the strife you are tasting reveals a heart that is not at rest. True and lasting change will not come through temporary remorse or a few kinder days. That would only be a change of actions, and actions alone never change the heart. The problem would merely be postponed. What she needs, what we must pray for, is an inward work of God’s Spirit, a rending of the heart, not just the garments. A heart that God touches will bring forth new desires, new attitudes, new actions. So I am joining you in asking Jesus to work that deep, internal change in her, the kind only He can give when He writes His desires on the fleshly tables of the heart.
But in the meantime, while you wait and pray, your own heart is the one you can actively guard. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life. When you are pulled into conflict, do not let her strife plant a root of bitterness or a love of transgression in you. Better is a dry morsel with quietness than a whole house full of sacrifices accompanied by strife. You can honor your mother before God without absorbing the spirit of her argument. Ask the Lord to search your own heart and to fill it with a merry, steadfast peace that acts like medicine to your soul. Even our Lord Jesus, when His own family did not understand, redefined His closest bonds around those who do the will of the Father. So draw near to the family of God, and find shelter for your heart there.
Pray with this confidence: God is interested in the heart because He changes people from the inside out. He can turn a perverse heart that finds no good into a wise, gentle heart that speaks pleasant words sweet to the soul. Nothing is too hard for Him. And as you release the need for control into His hands, He will keep your own heart steady, shaping you to delight in His will even in the middle of this difficult relationship.
