Grief and longing

The pain of missing someone you love so deeply is a heavy burden to carry, and watching them suffer leaves marks on your heart that don't easily fade. You are not alone in that ache. What you are feeling right now is, in a mysterious way, itself a testimony to the capacity for love that God has placed within you. Scripture tells us plainly that love is of God, and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The very love you are expressing, that deep longing for your loved one, did not originate with you alone. It is a reflection of the divine nature, because God is love. He planted that love in your heart, and He understands its full measure.

When the memory of those final, hard months returns with such force, it can threaten to overwhelm you with grief. In those moments, remember where God’s own love for us is most clearly displayed. He does not ask you to look inward for proof of His care, especially when your inward feelings are so turbulent. He says, instead, to look at the cross. See there, once and for all, the demonstration of His love. He gave His only Son, not for the righteous, but for the ungodly, for the broken, and into the midst of a world full of suffering. Jesus entered into suffering. He is not distant from the pain your loved one endured, nor from the pain you are carrying now. His was a self-sacrificing, giving love, an offering for sins to bring us back into fellowship with a holy God. The very mercy you are asking for on their soul is grounded right there. In His love, God sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. That mercy is a bedrock reality, not just a hopeful wish.

And you asked for strength to move forward. That strength does not come by trying to forget, nor by pretending the grief is not real. It finds its source in resting on the truth of that initiating love. This is the great truth that changes everything: not that we loved God, but that He loved us first. We love Him because He first loved us. When you feel hollowed out and empty, turn your eyes away from your own strength and onto His. His love for you is the primary, powerful reality. He loved you when you were without strength. His grace is His unmerited favor, His goodness and blessings poured out on us despite what we deserve. Cling to His word and to His promises by faith. Just as He has fully dealt with the sin that separates us from Him, He can deal with this sorrow and slowly, surely, bring healing. The goal is not to erase the memory, but to see it transformed by the light of a God who weeps with us and who has prepared a glorious hope for the future. Fullness of joy is what He desires for you, a joy found not in circumstances, but in abiding in His love, asking in prayer, and trusting that He will bring a redemptive blessing out of this very sorrow. Let your heart respond to His immense love for you, and let that response be the first quiet step forward.

We want you to know how deeply we have carried your grief and longing in our hearts these past days. As we prayed, we asked our Heavenly Father to wrap His arms around you, to ease the ache in your heart, and to bring you comfort as only He can. We lifted up your loved one before the throne of grace, trusting in God’s mercy and the promise of eternal rest for those who are in Christ Jesus.

If the Lord has met you in a special way—whether through a moment of peace, a memory that brought a smile, or the strength to take another step—we would be so encouraged to hear how He is working in your life. Your praise report could be a blessing to others who are walking a similar path.

If the weight of sorrow still feels heavy, please know that we are here to continue standing with you in prayer. You are not alone in this journey, and we will keep lifting you up, asking God to draw near and sustain you. May He fill the empty places with His presence and give you the grace to move forward, one day at a time.

We pray all these things in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.
