God, people say we should forgive sinners and leave justice to You. But my heart is full of questions. When someone does something wrong, why don’t they face the consequences at that very moment? And when an innocent family loses the person who was their only support and breadwinner, how can people simply say that everything You do is good?

God, I am not asking for revenge—I am asking for true justice. Let those who do wrong understand the consequences of their actions, and please do not let innocent people suffer without reason. You know my anger, my pain, and all the questions in my heart. I don’t want only words of comfort; I want to see truth and justice in my life.

We hear the deep honesty and pain in your heart as you cry out for true justice and not delayed pain, and we join with you in bringing this burden before the Lord together.

We understand your questions, why wrongdoers do not seem to face consequences at that very moment, and why an innocent family can suffer the loss of the one who supports them, and how hard it is to hear that everything God does is good when your eyes see such sorrow. The Scripture speaks directly to this tension. Ecclesiastes 8:11 says, Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. God sees this delay and knows how it troubles our hearts. Yet His delay is not indifference and it is not injustice. 2 Peter 3:9 tells us the Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness, but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. If God brought immediate punishment for every sin, none of us could stand, for Romans 3:23 says all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God. His patience is mercy giving time for sinners to repent, but His justice is certain. Nahum 1:3 says Yahweh is slow to anger and great in power, and will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. Deuteronomy 32:4 reminds us, All his ways are justice, a God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and right is he.

We also gently correct the thought that saying God is good means He causes innocent suffering without reason or that He delights in it. We live in a fallen world broken by sin, and the consequences of sin wound even the innocent, and this grieves the heart of God. He is not the author of evil, He is the One who judges evil and who draws near to those it harms. Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 103:6 says Yahweh executes righteous acts and justice for all who are oppressed. Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us, For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says Yahweh. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. We may not understand His timing, but we can trust His character, that He is both perfectly just and perfectly good, and He will in the end make all things right. Revelation 21:4 promises He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, death will be no more, neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more.

You are right to distinguish between revenge and true justice, and to desire that those who do wrong understand the consequences. The Word calls us to forgive as we have been forgiven, but forgiveness does not cancel justice. Romans 12:19 says, Do not seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God's wrath. For it is written, Vengeance belongs to me, I will repay, says the Lord. We are to release bitterness and leave judgment in His hands, while also praying that earthly authorities and God Himself will bring righteous accountability and that evildoers will come to repentance.

We notice your prayer was addressed to God but did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. We all have sinned and the wages of sin is death, but God so loved us that He gave His Son to die for our sins and rise again, so that whoever believes in Him will be forgiven and have eternal life, Romans 6:23. We encourage you to put your trust in Jesus Christ, to confess your sins and your questions to Him, and to come to God through His name.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, lifting up this heart that is full of anger, pain and honest questions. Lord, You see the injustice that burdens Your child, You see the innocent families who suffer loss, and You know every tear. We ask You to reveal Your justice in Your perfect time, to convict those who do wrong that they may understand the weight of their actions and turn and repent, and to restrain evil. We ask You to be the defender and provider for every innocent family who has lost their support, to be near to the brokenhearted, to supply their needs and comfort them with Your presence. Forgive us for when we have doubted Your goodness, and help us to trust that Your ways are higher than ours and that You are working even when we cannot see. Help this dear one to release the burden of vengeance to You, to forgive as You have forgiven us, while still hungering for righteousness. Draw this heart closer to Jesus, let Your truth and justice be seen in this life, and let Your peace that passes understanding guard this heart. We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and our just Judge, Amen.

Wanting true justice, not revenge, shows a heart that cares about what is right. God is not put off by your anger, pain, or questions. Many who love Him have wrestled with that same tension, holding both trust and confusion at the same time, and He invites that kind of honest prayer.

Your prayer comes before the Lord with an honesty that He does not despise, for you have declared your ways unto Him and He has heard you. The questions that fill your heart are not unknown to Him who hears the cry, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me.

You ask why the wrongdoer does not face the consequence at that very moment. Scripture teaches us that God is necessarily just, and justice cannot endure a sin, for He must repel impurity by the very law of His holy nature. Yet still does He spare the guilty and in His long suffering He gives them further opportunities for repentance. The bridge that sin broke between God and man is not repaired by hasty punishment alone, but by a divine plan of grace. If judgment fell the instant sin was done, where would any of us stand, for we have all sinned. The delay you feel so keenly is not indifference, it is forbearance, that men might turn and confess, O God, I am guilty, before His bar where He will be clear when He judges. When He comes to judgment, no man will be able to say He was unjust, for God will be justified in His sayings and clear in His condemning.

You ask also how it can be said that everything God does is good when an innocent family loses the one who was their support and breadwinner. This is that suffering which innocent persons are called to endure, not for evil doing, but while doing well, and it pierces the heart. Know this, that our Lord Jesus Himself has suffered being tempted and being forsaken, and His death was quite unique, for He suffered as the Just for the unjust that He might bring us to God. He was not made perfect in character by His suffering, for He was always perfect, but He was made perfect as the Captain of our salvation through suffering, that He might obtain a tender temper to succour those who are afflicted. He knows what it is to be innocent and yet to suffer, to cry tears that are meat day and night, and to feel as though the great Sun had suffered eclipse. Therefore He is not far from that family in its loss, nor from you in your anguish. The world is full of God to him who believes, and He sees every worm that crawls and every tear that falls, and He will not let innocent blood be forgotten.

To forgive sinners and leave justice to God does not mean that wrong is counted as nothing. If Christ really did suffer for sinners, then God is just in not punishing sinners who flee to Him, for the penalty of sin, which is death, has been met. But if men refuse that atonement and persist in iniquity, the justice of God is not set aside, there remains a basis upon which He will judge. To forgive as we are forgiven is to release vengeance from our own hands, not to declare that God has released it from His. Vengeance belongs to Him, and He will repay with unimpeachable justice.

You say you do not want only words of comfort but to see truth and justice in your life. Bring that very desire to Him in prayer, and ask Him to teach you His statutes. He who suffered outside the camp has sanctified His people by His own blood, and He will in the end cause every wound to tell of His righteousness. Every wrong shall be set right, either at the cross where sin was judged in Christ for those who believe, or at the final bar where God shall be glorified in the eyes of all.

May the Lord grant you grace to wait upon His justice without fainting, to hate the sin you have seen and to love the Savior who bore sin for you, and to find in your sorrow that He Himself has suffered and therefore is able to help you. May He keep that bereaved family in His bounty, for He is a God of bounty, and may He give you to see in His time that light streaming through that narrow window of why, until faith can say, Thou wast slain and hast redeemed us to God by Thy blood.

Your honest questions have been heard, and it is right to bring your anger and pain directly to God instead of hiding them. The desire you express is not for revenge but for true justice, and that desire itself is from God, for He loves justice and hates wrong.

You ask why God does not punish the wrongdoer at that very moment. Scripture teaches that what feels like delay is His long suffering, and His long suffering is not weakness but strength. As a spark falling into the deep does no harm to the sea but is itself quenched, so a long suffering soul is not easily destroyed by what falls upon it. God shows patience so that sinners may have space to repent and turn. If He gave immediate punishment for every sin, none of us could stand, for we all need that same mercy. Yet His patience is not overlooking evil. If wickedness is great and has not been repaid here, it is certain it will be repaid. Men do not overlook such things, how much less will God. To use His goodness as an excuse to continue in sin only makes the coming judgment more fearful, but to use it rightly leads to repentance and safety. So God is both just and merciful, mingling mercy with justice, and He will certainly not leave wrong unjudged.

You also ask how we can say God is good when an innocent family loses the one who supported them and is left to suffer. This pain is real and God does not call evil good. His goodness does not mean He prevents every sorrow in this life, but that He is faithful, that He enters our suffering Himself, and that He will set all things right. Jesus Himself, to sanctify His people with His own blood, suffered without the gate as one condemned. He was not spared suffering, but was made perfect through sufferings and through that suffering brought many sons to glory. He was glorified not by avoiding pain but by enduring it in love. This shows that suffering, even innocent suffering, is not forgotten or meaningless to God. He companions with those who suffer, and He promises a final judgment where every wrong will be accounted for and every tear will be seen.

To say God is good is to say He is just, loving, and true. He is not good because He immediately explains or removes every pain, but because He does not abandon us in it, because His justice will not fail, and because His mercy still gives time for sinners to be saved. That is why love is not easily provoked and thinks no evil, not because it ignores evil, but because it does not let anger take root into bitterness and trusts God to do what is right.

Continue to pray as you have, for true justice and for the protection of the innocent. Pray also that those who do wrong would come to see the weight of what they have done and repent while there is time, for that is the greatest justice, when a heart is changed and turns to Christ, through whom alone there is salvation. Ask God to keep your own heart from being hardened by the delay, to make you long suffering as He is long suffering, not easily overcome, and to give you comfort that is more than words, the comfort of knowing that He has not forgotten the innocent and will not withhold justice.

May God give you peace as you wait for His perfect justice, may He provide for those who have lost their support and show them He is still their provider, may He guard your heart from despair and turn your pain into steadfast hope, and may you see in your life the truth that He judges righteously and loves mercifully, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
