Disciple of Prayer
Dear Prayer Warriors, Please stand with me in urgent, fervent prayer. For nearly nine years I loved a woman named ###. She came into my life carrying deep wounds from past heartbreaks that had closed her heart. Over time she slowly opened that heart to me. I became the man who stood by her and her daughters — providing food when they needed it, helping whenever she asked, and consistently showing her that she was never a burden or a stress to me. I loved her fully and faithfully. She was my first girlfriend and the only woman I have ever given myself to completely. I still believe the connection we shared was rare and real. She once told me she felt it too, and in one of the most meaningful moments of our relationship she said she loved me and wanted to spend her life with me. Recently ### ended the relationship. She said she is struggling from every side, that she feels like too much of a burden, and that it would be easier for me to find someone with less weight. She even mentioned considering an open relationship as a way to cope. These words cut deeply. I have always tried to prove to her that she is worthy of love and that she can lean on me. I never asked her for anything in return. Now I am left wondering if her decision came from true desire to leave, or from walls, self-protection, shame, and overwhelming life pressure. I am ### years old. I am not married and I have no children. I am a quiet homebody who does not go to bars, clubs, or parties. I deeply desire a wife and a family of my own. The thought of walking through life alone is heavy. I still love ###. I miss her. I pray that she misses me too. I believe she is my soulmate, and a part of my heart still hopes that the Lord will soften her walls, remove the spirit of fear and burden from her mind, and bring us back together if that is His will. I ask that the idea of an open relationship be completely taken from her heart, because open relationships do not solve problems — they only bring more pain, heartbreak, shame, and brokenness. At the same time, if restoration with ### is not God’s plan, I ask Him to guide me to the right woman — or guide the right woman to me — someone who can receive love, give love openly, and walk with me into marriage and family. I do not want to live the rest of my life without a partner by my side. Please also pray for ###’s health as she faces medical tests, for her daughters, and for supernatural financial breakthroughs over both of our lives. The cost of living has been crushing. I have prayed for years for our relationship, for her peace, and for provision. Even when it feels like those prayers went unanswered, I continue to bring them before the Lord. Father God, heal ###’s heart from past wounds. Break every wall of coldness, distance, and self-protection. Let her see that she is not a burden. Restore what was broken if it is Your will, or clearly close the door and open a new one filled with mutual love, openness, and commitment. Give me strength to endure this pain without bitterness. Satisfy the deep longing in my heart for companionship, marriage, and children according to Your perfect timing and plan. Lord, I also ask that You keep me on ###’s mind even though she has known heartbreak in the past and sometimes shuts down emotionally, appearing cold and distant. Let her realize what she has lost. Let her miss me deeply — miss me to the point that she reaches out asking to come back, asking to try again, and asking to work together. If we are restored, I ask for financial miracles, blessings, and the full success of our relationship. If I am to be with someone else, I ask that those same blessings of provision, love, and success rest on that new relationship. We started as friends and acquaintances in ###. The love grew over time, and I am grateful I met her and was able to give her my heart. I never knew love could be both so beautiful and so painful. I remember early on, during one of our first dates, I gently asked if a kiss was possible. She said no but gave me a hug. When I got home and messaged her to make sure she made it safely, we talked for a while and she told me she felt comfortable in my arms. I felt that too, and it made me feel special. My father raised us to be gentlemen, and I am glad she recognized that and felt safe with me. Little moments like that will always stand out to me. I pray she realizes how much I loved her and still love her. Let me be in her dreams. Let everything around her remind her of me. Let her miss me. Thank you to every person who prays for us, and God bless you. I also ask the Lord to bless those who do not pray but just read. Please let things improve financially for both ### and me. Help her leave the past in the past where it belongs and allow her walls to come down. I wanted to be the man who would help bring those walls down, provide for her, and show her she is worthy of love — and I still want to be that man for her and her daughters. As much as this hurts, I still have faith that there is love for me in her heart and that she has not fully forgotten all the good times, the love, or how I made her feel, and that it is the walls and the stress that pushed me away. I still believe in a miracle, and I ask for that miracle. I ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

We have read your request and we stand with you in prayer before the Father in the mighty name of Jesus, and we thank you for sharing so openly from a wounded and faithful heart. We hear the depth of your love over nearly nine years, your desire to protect and provide for this woman and her daughters, to show her she is not a burden, and your longing for marriage and family. That desire for a wife and children is good and godly, for it is written Proverbs 18:22, He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor of Yahweh, and Psalm 37:4, Also delight yourself in Yahweh, and he will give you the desires of your heart. We also hear your pain in this separation and your earnest hope for restoration if it is the Lord's will.

We want to speak truth to you in love about several things that need biblical clarity. We affirm what you already discerned, that an open relationship does not solve problems but brings more pain and brokenness. Scripture is clear that marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled, but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers, Hebrews 13:4. An open relationship is fornication and adultery, it is sin before God and it must be completely rejected and repented of, not entertained as a coping mechanism. We pray that thought is taken from her heart entirely, and we praise God that you see this clearly.

We also must address what courtship is meant to be. We believe in the sanctity of marriage as a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, and that being a boyfriend or girlfriend should be considered courtship with the goal being marriage to another Christian believer. Nine years is a very long time to love someone without entering that covenant. God's design is not for prolonged dating without commitment, but for a man and woman to prayerfully discern marriage and then to marry, for it is written 1 Corinthians 7:2, Because of sexual immoralities, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. You said she was your first girlfriend and the only woman you have ever given yourself to completely. If that giving of yourself included sexual intimacy outside of marriage, we lovingly urge you to bring that before the Lord in confession and repentance, for it is written 1 Corinthians 6:18, Flee sexual immorality, and 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4, For this is the will of God, your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality, that each one of you know how to control his own body in sanctification and honor. God is gracious to forgive when we confess, 1 John 1:9, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Whether restoration with this woman or a new relationship is God's will for you, we pray that any future courtship will be pursued in purity and with clear intention toward holy marriage, and that you will seek a wife who is a believer in Jesus Christ, for 2 Corinthians 6:14 reminds us not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers.

We also gently correct the way we pray for one who has chosen to leave. It is understandable to ask God to keep you on her mind and to make her miss you and return, but we cannot pray to manipulate another person's will or to bind her dreams and thoughts to us. Love does not force, and God does not override the will He has given each person. Instead we surrender her and ourselves to the perfect will of God, trusting Proverbs 3:5-6, Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding, In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths, and Romans 8:28, We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose. The idea of a soulmate is not a biblical promise, but we know God is sovereign and He knows who is right for you. If the Lord restores this relationship, let it be restored toward marriage that honors Him, with walls healed and commitment made clear. If not, we pray He will clearly close that door and open a new one with a godly woman who can receive love and give love openly and walk with you into marriage and family.

We see your faithfulness as a gentleman who made her feel safe and comfortable, and God sees that too. We pray the Lord heals your heart and hers. For her, we pray Psalm 147:3, He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds, and Psalm 34:18, Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. May the Lord heal her deep wounds from past heartbreaks, break every wall of coldness, distance, self-protection and shame, and remove the spirit of fear, for 2 Timothy 1:7 says God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. We pray she will truly know she is not a burden and that she will leave the past in the past. We lift up her health and the medical tests before the Lord, and her daughters, that God would cover them with protection and peace. We also lift up the financial crushing you both feel, and we pray Philippians 4:19, My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus, and Philippians 4:6-7 that the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and thoughts in Christ Jesus.

We pray now together. Father God, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, by whom alone we have access to You and by whom alone we are saved, John 14:6, we come before Your throne of grace for our brother. You know his quiet faithful heart, his longing for a wife and family, and the pain of this loss. Heal his broken heart, take away bitterness and keep his heart soft and pure before You, let no root of bitterness spring up, Hebrews 12:15. Give him strength to endure this pain without bitterness and to wait on Your perfect timing. Comfort him as only You can, for You are near to the brokenhearted. Lord, we lift up this woman and her daughters to You, touch her body and bring good reports from her medical tests, provide for her needs, heal her past wounds, cast out fear and shame, and let her see her true worth in Christ. If it is Your will, soften her heart and restore what was broken in a way that leads to holy marriage between a man and woman for life, with purity, commitment, and Your blessing. If it is not Your will, we ask You to make that clear with peace, close that door firmly, and guide our brother to the godly wife You have for him, or guide her to him, a woman who loves You first and can walk with him into marriage and children. Provide supernatural financial breakthrough and wisdom and stewardship for both lives, and let Your will be done above all our desires. We ask all of this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our hope and our redeemer. Amen.

We read your letter carefully and we are standing with you in prayer. Nine years of loving someone so faithfully, showing up for her and her daughters and holding hope for a future together, is a deep investment. Of course this ending feels disorienting and painful. The way you wanted to be a safe, steady presence says a lot about your character, and we are grateful for the gentleman your father raised you to be.

We also hear the deeper ache underneath the breakup, the longing for companionship, marriage and family, and the fear of walking alone. That longing is good and it makes sense that this loss feels especially heavy right now as a quiet homebody who treasures home and stability.

Grief after a long love rarely moves in a straight line. Some days may feel steadier and others bring memories rushing back. In this season one steady help we have seen is not carrying it alone. Consider inviting one trusted pastor or mature friend to walk with you regularly, someone who knows you, can listen without rushing you, and can help you sort through what is grief, what is hope, and what is next. Staying connected in your church community, even in small ways, can also ease the isolation.

We are praying for ### as she goes through medical testing and we encourage trusting her medical team alongside prayer, and for both of you as you face financial pressure.

Father, we lift this brother to You. Comfort his heart in this grief, guard him from bitterness, give him wisdom for each next step and lead him according to Your will for his life and future family. Provide for his needs and for ### and her daughters and bring healing where it is needed. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your sorrow has been brought before the Lord and before His people, and we have heard the weight of these nine years, the tenderness with which you have cared for this woman and her daughters, and the deep ache that now follows her departure. The Lord knows the quiet path you have walked as a homebody desiring a wife and family, and He knows also the wounds she carries and the walls that have risen around her heart.

We must begin where all true comfort begins, not with what man wills but with what God wills. The whole scheme of salvation hinges upon the absolute will of God and not upon the will of the creature. Though the will of man is not ignored, and men are not saved against their wills, the work of the Spirit is to change the human will and make men willing in the day of God's power. Therefore we do not pray that God would merely bend a human heart to our desire, but that He would do His will, which is holy and wise and good. If restoration is to be, it must be His doing, and if a new door is to be opened, it must be His hand that opens it. It is vain for any man to think of turning Him from His eternal purpose, for what His soul desires, even that He does.

You have longed to find God in this pain, and that longing itself is a mercy. When the heart cries, Oh that I knew where I might find Him, that I might come even to His seat, the Lord turns at the cry that comes from the heart. He is not far from any one of us, for in Him we live and move and have our being. He is near in the shop and in the barn as well as in the closet, and there is no need to set bounds as to where you shall find Him. Get to your chamber and there cry unto Him and cease not. Meditate on His wonders of grace recorded in His Word, for David in his troubles knew where to turn for consolation. He looked into God's Word for comfort and said, My eyes fail from searching Your Word, saying, When will You comfort me. Do so still. Seek your comfort there rather than in running to the creature, and you shall surely find Him.

We join you in praying that every thought of an open relationship be taken away from her heart and from yours. Such a path does not heal wounds, it only brings more pain, heartbreak, shame and brokenness. Marriage is a holy covenant ordained of God, the lifelong union of one man and one woman, and all that belongs to that union, whether dwelling together or the giving of the body, belongs within that covenant alone. What you have desired, a wife and a family in the Lord, is good and honorable, but it must be sought in the way of holiness. We pray that the Lord would keep you both from presumption and make you willing to obey His law, for we must love His law if we would know His pardon.

There is healing for the wounded, and Christ is the physician. We very speedily care for bodily diseases, but the wounds of the heart are deeper and none can heal them but God alone. If you are driven out of yourself, like the wounded soldier crying for someone to carry you to the hospital of mercy, be of good cheer, there shall be found a great deliverance for you. He that believes is justified from all things, and it is God's prerogative to forgive and He delights to exercise it. Come to Him through Jesus Christ alone, for there is no other name by which we are saved. Put your trust in Him to be your King and Lawgiver, and He will save you. Ask to be forgiven and healing will come from the pardoning hand.

We lay these petitions before the throne of grace.

Father, in the mighty name of Jesus, we ask that You would heal this woman's heart from past wounds and break every wall of coldness, distance and self protection that fear and shame have built. Let her see that she is not a burden in Your sight, for You have borne our burdens on the cross. We pray for her health as she faces medical tests, and for her daughters, that You would cover them and keep them. Provide for their needs according to Your riches, and provide also for this man who has prayed so long for provision under the crushing cost of living. Teach us all not to say we will go and buy and sell and get gain as though we dispose of our own future, but to say if the Lord wills we shall live and do this or that, and to be content to live only a day at a time, keeping and guiding us just for today.

Lord, satisfy the deep longing of this man's heart not with bitterness but with Yourself. Give him strength to endure this pain without hardness of heart. If it be Your will, restore what was broken in a way that honors You, leading to a covenant of marriage that is pure and faithful. If it be not Your will, then clearly close that door and in Your perfect timing guide him to the woman You have prepared, or guide her to him, that they may walk together in mutual love, openness and commitment unto marriage and family. In either path, grant financial mercy and the full success that comes from doing Your will.

We pray that You would first heal and then give service, that out of a heart made whole he may minister to others and to You with joy. Let him not go out to build a home until You have built his heart. Fill the hungry soul with goodness, and let men praise You for Your wonderful works.

We ask all this not because we can claim it by our own will, but because Your will is done in heaven and we long to see it done on earth. Hear the cry of a longing soul, forgive through the blood of Christ, heal the brokenhearted, and do that which Your infinite wisdom sees best. Amen.

Lord Jesus please richly bless, protect and guide them. Please help them in accordance with your perfect will Father. Thank you and praise you. In your holy name I pray. Amen.
