Gambling

Disciple of Prayer
Last night my husband told me he played of his paycheck. He told me he's been playing the lottery. I was very upset, very upset. I don't know why he lied to me. He played all the money we had for the car we needed. I told him that we can go together to a gambler counselor. He said he wants me to help him. I told him I'm a counselor, but I don't have gambling supervision. He got upset. I want to ask prayer for my marriage. He gambled $4,000 last night. This is a big burden. I pray to God to help me and him because I don't know what else to do.

We hear your heartache and concern, and we come before the Lord with you in this difficult situation. Gambling is a serious issue that can destroy not only finances but also trust, peace, and the very foundation of a marriage. The Bible warns us clearly about the dangers of greed and the love of money, which is at the root of gambling. "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows" (1 Timothy 6:10 WEB). Your husband’s actions reflect a heart that has been ensnared by this temptation, and it is breaking your heart—and likely his as well, though he may not yet see it clearly.

We must also address the deception that accompanied this struggle. Lying about his gambling not only deepened the wound in your marriage but also dishonored God, who calls us to truth and transparency. "Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor, for we are members of one another" (Ephesians 4:25 WEB). His willingness to seek help is a step in the right direction, but it must be met with humility and a genuine desire to change. We encourage you to stand firm in your boundaries while also extending grace, as Christ does for us. You are right to suggest professional help—gambling addiction is not something to be taken lightly, and a counselor trained in this area can provide the tools and accountability he needs.

Let us pray together for your marriage and for your husband’s heart to be softened and transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this marriage to You. Lord, we ask that You would break the chains of addiction and deception that have taken hold of this husband. Soften his heart to see the destruction his actions have caused—not just to his finances, but to the trust and love in his marriage. Father, we pray that You would convict him deeply of his need for change and that he would turn to You in repentance, seeking Your strength to overcome this struggle. Give him the courage to seek the help he needs, and surround him with godly men who can walk alongside him in accountability and truth.

Lord, we also lift up this wife to You. She is carrying a heavy burden, and we ask that You would fill her with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Strengthen her to stand firm in her boundaries while also extending the grace and love of Christ. Help her to forgive, even as You have forgiven her, and give her wisdom in how to support her husband without enabling his sin. Father, restore the trust that has been broken in this marriage, and let Your healing power flow through their relationship. Remind them both that their marriage is a covenant before You, and that with You, all things are possible.

We pray for financial provision as well, Lord. You see their needs, and we trust that You will provide in ways that only You can. Help them to steward their resources wisely and to seek Your kingdom first in all things. Father, we rebuke the spirit of greed and addiction in the name of Jesus, and we declare that this husband is not defined by his struggles but by the redeeming power of Christ. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit, and let Your Word be a lamp to his feet and a light to his path.

We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the One who came to set the captives free and to heal the brokenhearted. Amen.

Sister, we want to encourage you to remain steadfast in prayer and to seek godly counsel for yourself as well. This is a heavy load to carry alone, and you need support. Surround yourself with believers who can pray with you, encourage you, and hold you accountable. Remember that your husband’s struggle is not a reflection of your worth or your ability to love him well. You are called to love him as Christ loves the church, but you are not responsible for his choices. Stand firm in your faith, and trust that God is at work even in the midst of this pain.

We also want to gently remind you both of the importance of putting Christ at the center of your marriage. If either of you has not yet surrendered your life fully to Him, now is the time. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6 WEB). Salvation is found in no one else, and it is only through Him that we can experience true freedom and healing. If your husband has not yet made that commitment, pray that the Lord would draw him to Himself and that he would come to know the saving power of Jesus Christ.

Lastly, we encourage you to continue seeking professional help for your husband. Gambling addiction is a powerful stronghold, and it often requires more than just willpower to overcome. A counselor trained in this area can provide the tools and strategies he needs to break free from this cycle. Be patient with the process, but do not enable his sin by covering for him or making excuses. Love him enough to speak the truth in love, even when it is difficult.

May the Lord bless you and your marriage with His peace, wisdom, and restoration. You are not alone in this struggle, and we stand with you in prayer.

We're here with you, sister. It's heartbreaking to see our loved ones struggle, and we know you're carrying a heavy burden. Come to the Lord's holy presence. Seek him with all your heart. Cling to his Word and meditate on it moment by moment by positive thoughts and joy in the heart (James 1:2-4), knowing that the Lord is good and to him be all the praise. Seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33). Even though life may feel hard, the Lord's hand will be on you, and he will answer in his time. I am praying for you. Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

We want to thank you for trusting us with your heavy burden and allowing us to stand with you in prayer during this difficult time. We have been lifting up your marriage, your husband, and your own heart before the Lord, asking Him to bring healing, wisdom, and restoration. We prayed that God would break the grip of gambling in your husband’s life and replace it with a deep desire for His truth and provision. We also asked the Holy Spirit to give you strength, patience, and discernment as you navigate this painful situation, and to fill your home with peace that surpasses understanding.

If God has already begun to work in your husband’s heart or brought any measure of healing to your marriage, we would be so encouraged to hear a praise report from you. Your testimony could be a blessing to others who are facing similar struggles. On the other hand, if you feel that your prayers have not yet been answered, or if the burden still feels overwhelming, we invite you to post your request again so that we may continue to intercede on your behalf. You are not alone in this battle, and we are committed to standing with you in faith.

May the Lord draw near to both of you, soften your husband’s heart, and give you the courage to seek godly counsel together. We pray that He would restore what has been lost and rebuild your marriage on the firm foundation of His love and grace. Continue to seek Him with all your heart, trusting that He hears your cries and is working even when you cannot see it. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
