We have read your reflection on detachment and we join with you in seeking God's wisdom together in Jesus' name. We hear in your words a deep inquiry about stepping back, both from what is hidden within people around you and from what is not, and whether that stepping back is meant to be as a teacher, as a learner, or in a season where teaching itself seems absent. We are called to be detached from sin, from the pattern of this world, and from conformity to darkness, while remaining attached to Christ and to His people. Romans 12:2 says do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. And 2 Corinthians 6:17 says come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. At the same time Colossians 3:2 tells us to set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth. True blessed and eternal life is not found in withdrawing into ourselves, but in being rooted in Christ. We also are warned not to detach ourselves from fellowship and accountability. Hebrews 10:25 reminds us not to forsake our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhort one another. If detachment means pulling away from the body of Christ, from correction, or from community, we gently rebuke that impulse, because God has designed us to grow together.

Your inquiry concerning detachment and what may lurk unseen within and around us has been laid before the Lord, and we have sought His wisdom on your behalf.
There is a conviction which must come early and remain always, that we need a Guide. Naturally we do not like being guided, but by a work of grace upon the heart we are made to feel our need of one. David knew this while yet a shepherd boy, and it was well for him that it was so. The Psalmist says, You shall guide me with Your counsel, and afterward receive me to Glory. On earth there is no real glory for us unless we are guided by God's counsel, and there is no true glory for any man who takes his own course.
You ask of detachment as teacher and learner, and of inquiry apart from teaching. Scripture shows us a better way. There are great principles infused in every man who takes God for his Guide, and among them is this, avoid everything that is evil. Bowing with submission to the will of God, by that very fact we are furnished with unerring guidance. True detachment, then, is not a vague withdrawal from people or from sound instruction, but a turning away from all that is evil and a turning unto Christ Himself.
In such matters haste is the author of a great deal of mischief in human life. Do not be hasty to frame a philosophy of detachment apart from the Word. The simplest and most plain matter kept away from Christ will turn out to be a maze, while the most intricate labyrinth, under the guidance of Christ, will prove to have in it a straight road for the feet of all those who trust in the Infallible Wisdom of their Lord.
We pray that the Lord will give you clarity and a settled mind, that He will show you what to put away and what to cleave to, that you will be kept from mere speculation and kept close to Christ and to the fellowship of His people where His Word is faithfully taught. May He guide you with His counsel in this life, and afterward receive you to Glory, for Christ's sake.
