Please help me to figure out what I should do. Should I move? What should I sell? Where? I am ready to move on with my life. Help me let go of the past and the bad memories. I want to start over.

We hear your cry for freedom and a fresh start, and we stand with you in seeking God’s guidance for this next chapter of your life. The desire to move forward and leave behind pain is a holy longing, one that God Himself invites you to bring before Him. Scripture tells us, "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland" (Isaiah 43:18-19 WEB). The Lord is not only aware of your past but is actively working to redeem it and lead you into His purposes.
First, we must address the foundation of your decision-making. Have you surrendered this transition to the Lord, or are you seeking to orchestrate it in your own strength? Proverbs 3:5-6 (WEB) warns, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." Moving, selling possessions, or starting over apart from God’s leading can lead to greater unrest. We urge you to seek Him first, not just for direction, but for His direction. Spend time in prayer and fasting, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal whether this move aligns with His will for your life.
If the Lord confirms this is His path for you, then we rejoice with you! But let us also rebuke any spirit of escapism. Sometimes, the pain of the past can drive us to run from something rather than toward God’s best. Are you moving to flee memories, or are you moving toward a calling? Psalm 32:8 (WEB) promises, "I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you." The Lord may be calling you to a new location, but He may also be calling you to heal where you are. Either way, He desires to walk with you through the process.
As for what to sell or keep, consider this: "Do not lay up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven" (Matthew 6:19-20 WEB). Material possessions can become idols if they hinder your dependence on God or distract you from His purposes. Ask the Lord to show you what to release, whether it’s physical clutter, emotional baggage, or even relationships that no longer align with His will. But also ask Him what to hold onto, memories, lessons, or people who have been part of His faithfulness in your life.
We must also address the importance of community in this transition. Proverbs 18:1 (WEB) warns, "A man who isolates himself pursues selfish desires; he defies all sound judgment." Starting over can be lonely, but God never intends for you to walk alone. Seek out a local church body where you can grow in faith and accountability. If you’re moving, research godly communities in advance. If you’re staying, ask the Lord to deepen your roots where you are.
Now, let us pray with you:
"Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our brother/sister, lifting up their desire for a fresh start. Lord, You are the God who makes all things new, and we ask that You would go before them in this season. Reveal Your will clearly, whether You are calling them to stay or to go, to release or to hold fast. Break the chains of past pain, Father, and let Your healing flow. We rebuke any spirit of fear, escapism, or self-reliance, and we declare that Your peace will guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus.
Lord, if this move is Your plan, provide wisdom for every decision, what to sell, where to go, and how to steward their resources for Your glory. If You are calling them to remain, give them the strength to face their past with courage and the grace to see Your redemption in their present circumstances. Surround them with godly counsel and community, and let Your presence be their comfort and guide.
We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, for it is by His blood that we have access to You and by His name alone that we are saved. May Your will be done in their life, and may they walk in the freedom that comes from surrendering to You. Amen."

The very desire to break with the past is a leaf from the healing tree. The least things about Christ have virtue in them, and this holy restlessness you feel is not mere natural discontent, it is the medicine of Heaven beginning its work. The leaves of that tree are for the healing of the nations, and here is a leaf falling upon your soul, stirring you to leave the old haunts and memories behind. But remember, the moving of your body to a new place will not in itself move your spirit into peace. There must be a going out, not knowing whither, but knowing with whom you go. Abraham went out by faith, and faith must be your compass. You ask what to sell and where to go, these are the details that follow the greater surrender. Sell whatever holds you to the Egypt of your past sorrows. If there are possessions that cling to those bad memories like the garments of a leper, let them go. They are but bricks from the house of bondage. What you lose of material things, you gain in liberty to follow the cloud by day and the fire by night. Our case may be quite beyond our own comprehension, but it is all plain to Him who sees the end from the beginning.
Now, as for the healing of those wounds that smart so keenly, you must go to the great Physician for a double cure. First, forgiveness. If any part of those bad memories springs from your own sin, hear this and hear it well: the eternal penal consequences are gone from the forgiven man. Christ’s word to the soul that confesses is, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” Go in peace, out from the courtroom of condemnation, out from the company of accusers, out from the paralysis of guilt. But then there is the healing of the heart itself. He heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds. The soldier retiring from the battlefield knows there is a hand to extract the shot and liniments to heal. You have been in the battle and the wounds are real, but the balm of Gilead has lost none of its power. The power that dwelt in Christ to heal is applicable most eminently to the removal of the sorrow that chokes out hope. He can give joy to the troubled countenance, take the furrow from the brow, wipe the tear from the eye.
But see that you do not try to go forward on yesterday’s grace. The train rushes along its iron pathway and is supplied with water as it runs, drinking fresh at every trench. Your soul must have fresh grace, daily depending on the bounty of God, smelling of the hand that gives it every morning. You shall be anointed with fresh oil. The past forgiveness is the foundation, but you need fresh anointing for the new step, the new home, the new life. And when the question presses, “Where should I go?”, do not seek a place utterly free from all opportunity to return to old sins. Where can we go to escape? If we mount on the wings of the wind, corruption still dwells within. It is only grace that can keep grace alive. But go where you can find the teaching of the Word, for the healing power is conspicuously present where Christ is taught. Sit under a ministry that breaks the heart rightly, but which also proclaims that God alone can heal it, and does so through the leaves of that blessed Tree.

You are ready to move on with your life, to shake off the dust of old sorrows, and I hear the cry of a soul longing for freedom. But consider first the kind of freedom you seek. Do not make the error of those who, chafing under affliction, imagine that a new door, a new city, a cleared house will give the soul what only the physician of souls can give. The beginning of such a desire often carries a hidden root of pride, a root which, if not extirpated, will sprout again wherever you go. For if you cannot bear to be wounded by memories, you may find yourself unable to bear any insult from inferiors or even from life itself, and that inability is the very beginning of greater sin.
Do not rush out with the minstrels of worldly counsel, those who beat their breasts and tell you that selling all and fleeing is the sole cure. Remain instead with Peter and James and John, at the feet of the Teacher who sends us out bare and unshod as sheep among wolves. True freedom is won not by escaping the place of pain, but by enduring insults, blows, and even the spoiling of peace without being galled. This is the new warfare, and it trains the soul to a freedom from passion that no move can bestow. The bad memories are wolves, but go into their midst with the gentleness of a sheep, and they will lose their teeth.
When you ask what to sell, examine the motive. If you are burdened by possessions, by all means simplify, but build only with gold, silver, and costly stones, those works of mercy, prayer, and watchfulness that survive the fire. Let go of the wood, hay, and stubble of angry attachment to the past. Yet beware of doing anything out of a puffed up mind that thinks a change of sky changes the heart. Pride is the very foundation of sin; it corrupts every performance and makes even a good outward action fruitless. So first extirpate that root. Then, if you still must move, do so not as one fleeing the cross but as one ascending in mind beyond all time and place, where Christ sits at the right hand of the Father. There is your true beginning, and it has no need of an earthly address.
