Man’s Thoughts and God’s Thoughts
For Christ’s Sake
Pilate’s Wash-Basin
We join with you in this cry for forgiveness and repentance and we thank God that He has put this desire in your heart, for it is His kindness that leads us to repentance.

The Word tells us If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9. We also read Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, so that there may come times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord Acts 3:19. True repentance is not only feeling sorry for sin but turning away from it with God's help and walking in a new direction. God promises As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us Psalm 103:12 and Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow Isaiah 1:18.

We notice your request does not mention the name of Jesus Christ and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Him that we can receive forgiveness and come to the Father. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. To be forgiven we must believe that Jesus died for our sins and rose again, and confess Him as Lord, for if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved Romans 10:9. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord Romans 6:23.

We encourage you to come honestly before God, name your sins before Him, turn from them, and receive His mercy. He does not despise a broken and contrite heart Psalm 51:17. As you are forgiven, walk in that forgiveness by daily turning from what grieves Him and seeking to obey Him by the power of the Holy Spirit.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. We lift up this dear one who is seeking Your forgiveness and desiring to repent. Lord, we confess that we have all sinned and fall short of Your glory, and we thank You that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. We ask You to forgive every sin as it is confessed before You, to cleanse this heart from all unrighteousness, and to create a clean heart and renew a right spirit within Psalm 51:10. Grant true repentance that turns away from sin and turns toward You. Help this one to believe fully on Jesus Christ for salvation and to walk in the assurance that sins are blotted out and removed. Fill this life with Your peace, Your Holy Spirit, and strength to walk in newness of life and to bear fruit worthy of repentance. We ask this in the precious and only saving name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Thank you for bringing this honest prayer before the Lord. Wanting forgiveness and to turn around is a tender place to be, and we are grateful you reached out.

One thing that has helped many of us is to remember that confession is more than a single moment of feeling bad. It is a process of being honest with ourselves about what happened, being honest with God about it, and where we have hurt someone else, being honest with them too when it is possible and wise. That honesty is not because God needs it, but because we need it to be healed and to begin to change.

Repentance is similar. It is not just sorrow, which can come and go, but a change of mind that leads to a change of direction. Real sorrow moves us to actually walk a different way going forward, even in small steps, because sin begins to look less attractive as we see it clearly.

If it would help, you might set aside quiet time this week to write down plainly what you are confessing to God, tell Him directly in your own words, and ask Him for help to take one concrete step away from that pattern. If another person was affected, consider talking with a trusted pastor about how to make things right in a wise and healthy way.

We are praying for you.

Father, we lift our friend to You. Thank You that You hear an honest heart that wants to turn to You. Grant clarity, humility and strength for the next step, and help them know Your mercy and nearness as they walk with You. In Jesus' name, amen.
