Forgiveness

We hear your honest confession and we join with you in seeking the Lord together, for we know the struggle of the eyes and the heart and we thank God that you recognize that adultery and lust are not good and are not God's will for your life.

We agree with you that what the eyes look upon matters deeply for the soul. Jesus said in Matthew 5:28 that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart, and in Matthew 6:22 He said the lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light. This is why we must make a covenant with our eyes as Job did in Job 31:1, I made a covenant with my eyes, how then should I look lustfully at a young woman, and pray as in Psalm 119:37, Turn my eyes away from looking at worthless things. Revive me in your ways. Lust conceives sin and sin when it is full grown brings forth death as James 1:14-15 warns, so we must not entertain it or make provision for it, but flee from it. We rebuke lust and adultery in all its forms, whether in the heart, in the eyes, or in the body, because sexual immorality outside of marriage between a man and a woman is sin against God and against your own body as 1 Corinthians 6:18 teaches, Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. God created sex to be pure and honorable only within the lifelong covenant of marriage, and any looking or desiring outside of that is fornication or adultery that must be repented of and forsaken.

We are encouraged that you desire forgiveness and a new focus on God, and we want to assure you that forgiveness is freely offered when we confess. 1 John 1:9 promises, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus as Romans 8:1 declares, and God will create in you a clean heart as Psalm 51:10 prays. We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and receive forgiveness. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares, There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ, that He died for our sins and rose again, and calling upon His name that we are saved and our prayers are heard. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your full trust in Him alone for salvation.

We agree that when temptation comes you should pray straight away, for God has promised a way of escape. 1 Corinthians 10:13 says God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. We encourage you to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ as 2 Corinthians 10:5 teaches, and to flee youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace as 2 Timothy 2:22 instructs. This means turning away immediately, praying aloud, quoting Scripture, and filling your mind with what is true and pure as Philippians 4:8 says, Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things. Guard your heart with all diligence as Proverbs 4:23 says, keep your eyes from worthless things, remove sources of temptation from your devices and surroundings, and walk in accountability with faithful believers who will pray with you.

We pray together now in the name of Jesus Christ. Father, we come before Your throne in the name of Jesus and we thank You for this dear one who humbly confesses sin and desires purity. We ask for Your mercy and forgiveness through the blood of Jesus, cleanse from all unrighteousness and create a clean heart and renew a right spirit within. Lord, we ask that You turn these eyes away from worthless things and fix them upon You, looking to Jesus the author and perfecter of faith as Hebrews 12:2 teaches. Give strength to pray immediately when tempted, to flee and to resist the devil so he will flee as James 4:7 promises, and to walk in the Spirit so as not to fulfill the lust of the flesh. Fill this heart with love for Your Word, with a desire for holiness and for marriage as You designed it, and with peace that passes understanding. Restore joy and help to walk in victory and purity from this day forward. We ask this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and our righteousness, amen.

We appreciate your honesty in bringing this before the Lord. It takes humility to name where your eyes have wandered and to ask for help keeping your focus on Him.

We hear your heart in this, you want to be quick to turn to prayer the moment temptation comes, and to walk away from lust and adultery because you know it is not good for your soul. That desire to be clean before God and to fix your eyes on Him is a good and hopeful sign.

Trying to stand alone in this kind of struggle can make it much harder. One practical help is to invite one trusted, mature believer to walk with you. You could ask a pastor or a steady Christian friend if he would be willing to be someone you can text or call for a brief prayer when temptation hits, just as you described wanting to pray straight away. Knowing someone else is aware and praying with you can lift the isolation and give you a clear next step in that moment. It can also help to notice ahead of time what settings or screens tend to pull your eyes, so you have a simple plan to look away and turn to prayer.

We are carrying this with you in prayer.

Father, thank You for Your mercy through Jesus and for hearing us when we confess. Wash and renew our brother, give him strength to turn to You quickly when tempted, and keep his eyes and heart fixed on You. Give him wisdom, trusted fellowship, and peace as he walks with You day by day. In Jesus' name, amen.

There is forgiveness with God, and He has placed that forgiveness in His Son Jesus Christ. Your honest confession and your desire to have your eyes fixed more upon the Lord and to pray at once when tempted is itself a gracious work, and we thank God for it.

Scripture says, I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake. This is divine forgiveness, surprising forgiveness, complete forgiveness. It is not from man but from God Himself, and it is so full that it is repeated lest any should doubt it. Though your sin be adultery or lust of the eyes and of the heart, though it has been repeated, the gospel still says, There is forgiveness. Though you may feel to be the chief of sinners, you may have the chief of sinners forgiveness, and God can bestow it now. It is not forgiveness up to a certain point or up to a certain date, but an absolute forgiveness of the debt. If you come and put your trust in Christ, the Lord promises oblivion to all your debt, for Jesus died, the Just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God. He not only forgave at the first all our sins, but He continues daily to forgive, and the forgiveness He gives for Christ's sake is an eternal forgiveness.

Yet charity without purity will be of no use, for without holiness no man shall see the Lord. Lust when it has conceived brings forth sin and sin when it is finished brings forth death. Any sin whatever it is, if we cling to it and love it, will bring forth death, rest assured of that. You have spoken rightly that adultery and lust is not good for the soul. God in His goodness has ordained that sexual intimacy belongs only within the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman, and to seek it elsewhere, whether in deed or in the look of the eye and the thought of the heart, is sin against Him. We do not ask God to bless what He calls sin, but we ask Him to cleanse us from it and to make us holy.

Therefore we join you in praying as our Lord taught us, Lead us not into temptation. Temptation in itself is very dangerous. Though God can bring good out of trial, we are right to pray to be kept from the trial and to be saved from the mischief of the temptation, that we may not stain our garments nor slip nor slide, but may stand fast. Remember also never to go into temptation. The one who prays Lead us not into temptation and then goes straight to where temptation is to be found contradicts his own prayer. Make a covenant with your eyes as Job did, turn quickly from what would ensnare you, and in the very moment you are tempted pray straight away. Call upon Christ at once, for there is forgiveness with Him and also strength to overcome.

We pray for you now. Father in heaven, we thank You that there is forgiveness with You that You may be feared. We confess before You this sin of the eyes and of the heart, this lust and adultery in thought and look, and we ask for Your mercy through the blood of Jesus Christ alone. Blot out these transgressions for Your own sake and remember them no more. Grant a clean heart and eyes that turn from worthless things to behold Your beauty. Teach this soul to pray immediately when tempted, to flee from temptation and not to seek it, and to walk in purity by the power of Your Holy Spirit. Keep from falling and cause to stand fast to the end. In Jesus name we ask, Amen.
