It is a good and humble thing that you want to make this right and seek forgiveness. God sees that desire in your heart and He honors a heart that is willing to confess and to be reconciled.

The first place to bring your actions is to the Lord Himself. Scripture teaches that forgiveness with God is not like the way we often forgive one another, where we say we forgive but keep hold of the offense to bring it up again later. That is like burying the hatchet but leaving the handle sticking out. When God forgives through Jesus Christ, His forgiveness is total and complete. He blots out the sin, He remembers it no more, and He justifies us so that we stand before Him as though we had never sinned. Though your sins be as scarlet they shall be as white as snow. But that forgiveness comes as we stop justifying or hiding what we have done and openly acknowledge it before Him. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us. You do not need to carry this guilt as a weight on your conscience any longer. Bring it fully to Him, ask for His mercy according to His tender mercies, and receive His pardon by faith in Jesus.

Jesus also taught that forgiveness is not a matter of mathematics or keeping count, but a matter of the heart and spirit. Peter once asked if forgiving seven times was enough, and Jesus answered with a number that meant you stop counting. He told of a servant who was forgiven an enormous debt by his king, to show that we who have been forgiven so much are to forgive as God has forgiven us. We are to be followers of God in this, walking in love as Christ loved us and gave Himself for us. That is why there is only one petition in the prayer Jesus taught that He went on to explain again at the end, that if we do not forgive others, we put a barrier in our own walk with the Father.

That kind of forgiving heart does not come naturally. It must be given by God, and He will give it if you are willing. Pray honestly for it. Tell Him where there is still bitterness or an unforgiving spirit and ask Him to take it away and to give you His spirit of forgiveness. You must be willing, and He will give you the capacity to forgive and to love with a true forgiveness that does not keep a record and does not bring the offense up again.

As you pray for this other person to forgive you, do so with that same spirit. Go to them humbly, without demanding a certain response, confessing your part without excuse, and asking for their forgiveness. It is right to pray that God would open the door for a call or a message and for friendship to be restored if it is His will, and God is a God who restores what has been broken. He can rebuild what sin has damaged. At the same time, leave the outcome in His hands. True reconciliation requires the willing heart of both people, and sometimes the other person needs time. Your part is to have a heart that has been cleansed by God and that holds no bitterness, whether reconciliation happens quickly or takes time.

May the Lord give you His complete forgiveness and peace as you confess to Him, and may He give you a heart that forgives as you have been forgiven. Praying that He will work in both of your hearts, bring healing where there has been hurt, and lead you in His grace to whatever restoration He knows is best.

Father, we bring this sin and this broken friendship before You. We ask for Your mercy and Your total forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Wash away this guilt and make this heart white as snow. Take away any bitterness and give a true spirit of forgiveness from the heart. Work also in the heart of the friend who was hurt, and if it be Your will, open the way for honest conversation and healing. Help both to follow Your example, to forgive as You have forgiven us, and to walk in love. In Jesus name, Amen.
