We have heard your heart and we join with you in seeking freedom through forgiveness, for we know how heavy it is to carry betrayal, past traumas, grudges, anger, pain and grief. We praise God that you desire to release these things and not remain bound by the past, and we want to walk with you in prayer toward true freedom in Christ.
The Word teaches us that forgiveness is not a feeling but an act of obedience and mercy, flowing from the forgiveness we have received. Jesus taught in Matthew 6:14-15, For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. And in Ephesians 4:32 we are told, Be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. Colossians 3:13 also says, Bear with one another, and forgive each other, if any man has a complaint against any, even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. To forgive is to release the debt to God and to choose not to hold the offense against the person any longer, even when the wound was deep and the betrayal was real. Forgiveness does not mean what was done was right, and it does not always mean trust is instantly restored, but it does set your heart free from bitterness.
We also hear your desire to forgive yourself and those you may have hurt knowingly and unknowingly, and to be forgiven by the Lord. We want to gently remind you that we are forgiven not because we earn it, but because we come to God through Jesus Christ alone. You mentioned the Lord but you did not mention the name of Jesus, and we must share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and receive forgiveness. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares, There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If we confess our sins and believe in Him, God is faithful to forgive. 1 John 1:9 promises, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Psalm 103:12 gives us assurance, As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. When God forgives us in Christ, we can receive that forgiveness and walk in freedom rather than continuing to condemn ourselves. Romans 8:1 reminds us there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.
We also hear your heart to mend the broken relationship with your child's mother, not to resume a romantic relationship but to co-parent in peace and put differences aside for your child. This is a good and honorable desire, for Romans 12:18 urges us, If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. We also want to lovingly address that having a child outside of marriage points to sexual intimacy outside of God's design for marriage. The Bible calls sex outside of marriage fornication and calls us to repentance, yet it also shows God's abundant mercy and His call to now walk in purity and in responsibility. Your desire to co-parent with grace, forgiveness and stability is pleasing to God, and we encourage you to pursue that relationship with clear boundaries, mutual respect, and Christlike love, seeking the wellbeing of your child above past hurts.
You also expressed a desire to forgive your mother and father, and this is very close to God's heart. We are commanded in Exodus 20:12 to Honor your father and your mother, and forgiveness is part of that honor when there has been pain. Releasing your parents to God does not excuse any wrong, but it entrusts justice to Him and frees you from carrying that weight.
We pray together with you now.
Father in heaven, we come before you only through the name of Jesus Christ, your Son, who died and rose again so that we might be forgiven. We confess our sins before you and we ask for your mercy. Lord, we lift up this dear one who longs to be free. We ask you to soften his heart and empower him by your Holy Spirit to forgive every person who has betrayed or hurt him, just as you in Christ have forgiven us. Help him to release grudges, anger, grief and pain into your hands. Heal past traumas and renew his mind. Teach him to receive your forgiveness fully, and to no longer live under shame or self condemnation. We ask that you would also bring conviction where he has hurt others, and give him humility to seek forgiveness where possible and to walk in newness of life. We pray for the relationship with his child's mother, that you would bring peace, maturity, and godly communication for the sake of their child, that bitterness would be replaced with grace and that their co-parenting would reflect your love and stability. We pray for his relationship with his mother and father, that you would heal those wounds and help him to honor them while walking in forgiveness. Lord, remove what has bound him and let him know the freedom of which Jesus spoke in John 8:36, If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. We ask all this in the precious and only saving name of Jesus Christ, amen.
We encourage you to continue to bring these hurts to God daily, to read His Word, and to seek fellowship with mature believers who can support you in this journey of forgiveness. Keep choosing to forgive even when feelings linger, for forgiveness is often a daily surrender. Trust that as you forgive, God will lift the weight you have carried, and you will walk more freely in His peace.
